Hello! I've been reading through a bunch of forums on here about highlighting relevant information in documents provided for the I-129F packet. I'm submitting flight itineraries, receipts, boarding passes, baggage tickets, phone records and call logs, etc. basically documents filled with a lot of information. Highlighting (yellow) seems like it would make it easier for the officer reviewing, but the "Lockbox Filing Tips" on USCIS page says this -

Complete Your Form Accurately:

  • We use special scanners to read your forms and documents. The scanners will not properly read information that is greyed out, highlighted or corrected using correction fluid or tape.

Is it best to not highlight, then? Just wanted to see if there was a consensus on this. PS I'm petitioning for my fiancé in Cuba, thanks! x

I've never heard of highlighting anything USCIS adjudicators can read. simply list the items on the cover letter and that should be sufficient. Highlighting is not necessary. I don't see how it would help anything.

TatiyPablo,

I totally highlighted a bunch of pages on my application. I read in one of my books that it would be helpful. Now, I'm reading that it is not helpful. I'm not sure which is correct. The book I have is a few years old and the comments here seem to be the most recent information. It's hard for me to tell if it is important, perhaps it does not matter that much? But looking on answers from the past on this site, I noticed that others have highlighted too.

Thanks!

TatiyPablo,

I think the comment about highlighting on USCIS site is with regards to their forms, not the supporting documentation, such as phone bills.

thx

I think what might be helpful is using a "cover page" for your supporting evidence. That is what I did. In that cover page I listed all of the supporting documents I was submitted in the order that it was in my binder. Maybe that might help the officer reviewing it.

Damn - I highlighted a few things on some supporting documentation... not much but a little.

I hope you are correct - its only the forms they care about...

Although now that I think about it... they scan the whole packet so it is readily available for those that need to see it access it via their computer system. :ranting:

Thanks for all of your replies! I have a cover letter, and even cover letters for my individual sections breaking down what information is included - I'm definitely doing the most! When submitting things like monthly phone call logs with tons of numbers it seems like it would be best to highlight calls between you and your fiancé. I spent a ton of time doing this but then decided against, reprinted and made copies of everything, and will just be using a small post-it or sticky note to identify pertinent info. But I don't think this is a deal breaker. Thanks again for all your help.
