Hmph... all I have now is crappy mousey hair the way nature intended

haha.. just have to add, I know it's a good un if I can say, "this is not a color found in nature.. "

Hah, you are soooooo right - and why is it the most flattering colours are ones that are nothing like those found in nature?!

Well you see for me, my hair is REALLY dark brown, almost black and is EVIL to dye cause it doesn't accept anything.

And I don't dye my hair normal colours

I have the opposite problem... mine's not blonde, by any stretch of the imagination (fair and mousey, as I mentioned above)... but light enough that it'll take dye really well (the peroxidey-based kind, that is, no point even trying with 'temporary' ones, they do NOTHING) and will look great for about 5 days... then it all comes right out and I'm left with mousey hair with a hint of whatever colour it was. As I like dyeing it pinky-purply-reddy colours, this usually results in me spending 3 weeks out of every 4 with a lilacy-blue rinse like some octogenarian. Soooo not a good look, that. (The other option is to bleach it a bit, then use those insanely coloured 'Directions' dyes and top it up every few days, but that's far too much effort). So I'm resigned to mousiness now. :(

Sigh... I *miss* silly and unnatural-coloured hair.

Choose a good shampoo. I use a special one for red hair, it helps keep the colour in, even in the sun (which fades it). If I don't the colour goes pretty quickly.

I did try the John Frieda one (Radiant Red, or whatever it's called), and I think it helped a bit, but I'd still have needed to be dyeing my hair about every 10 days. Then again, at least that way I wouldn't get roots.... I'm just wondering how badly it damages your hair to dye it more than once every 4 weeks or so?! Mine always looks shinier and healthier when it's dyed, although it obviously - that'll be that incredibly rich conditioner they always give you with hair dye but never seem to sell separately! Is your hair quite dark naturally, Mags? I can't work out why I can never get the dye to last in mine, whether it's too light, not light enough, too fine, or what... the only thing that ever seemed to stick without fading too quickly was black, but I'm not doing that again!!

They DO sell the conditioner seperately, in...Boots! (of course) I've been seeing the individual tubes of Clairol post-dye conditioner in the Boots near my office for about a year now. Even though I don't dye my hair I buy a few from time to time when it's looking a bit blah. I think it's 99p a tube, or something similar.

Hey,

I went to Target tonight and noticed that they had a whole section of Boots cosmetics now, all imported from the UK. I must admit I did a bit of a double take seeing the Boots logo on a big display in Target!

Just though some of the ex-pat Brits here would like to know.

Thank you for the info.we get so silly about trying to get that good ole british stuff that we all took for granted!! I found a body shop locally and am in seventh heaven...now I just need a NEXT and I'll be almost human again :)

I think my hair is a similar colour to yours naturally. Mousey fair with a touch of red here and there in sunlight. I was white blonde as a child. Shame that changed really, nothing worse than my natural colour now as an adult. I hate it. It is also really fine, my ponytail is rather embarrassing, so I dog clip it or keep it down (where it looks normal).

I use John Freida Radient Red conditioner and shampoo. It works wonders with my hair. If I use a normal conditioner/shampoo it fades REALLY quickly. Currently I dye my hair every 4-5 weeks and it does fade...but only a little.

Maybe you should go to a hairdresser and get them to do it. Explain to them the problem you are having and see if they have better results. Or perhaps you have already...lol. Worth a try if you haven't.

The last dye I used here was a Nice N' Easy one. I normally avoid them, but I was annoyed at the lack of choice colour wise. It contained a tube of that conditioner stuff AND it has enough to use once a week for 6 weeks. In fact, it tells you to do that on the box. Still NEVER looks as shiney as it does after it is dyed though.

I think they don't recommend you dye your hair too much, I think it can lead to a gradual thinning, but I may be talking out of my backside with that one....

Actually i think if you check out the boots website they ship internationally?....

The website says:

"We are able to deliver throughout the UK (including the Isle of Man and The Scottish Islands)and Northern Ireland. For British Forces Post Office addresses, please click here.

"However, if you do live outside the UK, you can still place an order for delivery within the UK. Just enter the UK address in the correct page at the checkout."

They do allow for BFPO delivery, but it's restricted to armed forces and certain civilians. So you can place your order but you'll still need someone to bring it back from the UK. :crying:

very very cool!

Just had an idea to give my bridesmaids for their gifts!

British spa treatment stuff!

That's a great idea! I already thought of having some British sweets at my wedding since there are several stores here that carry them.

My grandma, who is from Wales, told me just the other day that she saw Boots stuff at Target. I got all giddy! I used to love getting Rimmel stuff at Walmart, since it was cheaper than getting it in the UK. Now they have it at Walgreens and Target too.

Featherb, mags - I feel bad for you.

My hair is totally opposite to yours!

Mine is so dark it shines blue AND red in the light, its weird.

And its so thick - drives me crazy. I know everyone says having thick hair is better but honestly ,I spend a fortune on anti frizz, endless hours straightening it for it to STILL look wavy and my ponytail is thick!

If I bleach my hair I have to dye it *3* times before it sticks and isn't just orange!

FeatherB, have you tried demi-permanent (not temp or permanent)? I died mine too much, and wanted to go back to my natural dark blonde. The color would fall out within 10 days as well. The last time I went in, they used demi and its stayed in. It fades with time, but still longer than the 10 mark...

I went in to our Target today and they had it!!!! I was SO excited! Did you all hear about that one anti-wrinkle cream that has flown off the shelves and is now being sold on e-bay for ridiculous mark ups? Ya, so Paul made me go and check to see if we had it in our stores with instructions to buy as much as I could if they had it. Thankfully they did not, so his scheme didnt exactly pan out ;)

I noticed the Boots section last week and did a double-take myself. It looked normal for a moment and then I thought "wait a mo . . ."

Not that it's exactly the same thing - but it always cracks me up what is cooler when it's imported. Like if some London corner were suddenly occupied with a new Rite-Aid, would people go "oooh!" :) I want there to be a Superdrug here because I like their funky-retro logo and the fact that it's called superdrug (like superfly).

speaking of imports - have you all heard that tesco is apparently making in-roads over here as well? i hear they've been looking at places in Southern California, but I haven't seen anything for-sure yet. Of course, that's only exciting if it's filled with british staples and if everything is called by its english names, right? Swedes for all! Rutebegas be damned!

And Penguins. And plain chocolate biccies. And really tasty crisps . . . . And scotch eggs . . . . and coronation chicken . . . uh-oh, now I'm hungry again!

I'm happy to say that my wife made me a Coronation Chicken Sandwich the other day. This was amazing for 3 reasons:

1. She's American, obviously.

2. I usually do all the cooking in this family!

3. It was delicious.

OK - I admit I cooked the chicken for her, otherwise it would have been a burnt Coronation Chicken sandwich. ;)
