Is not that simple. I hope somebody can chime in and help me here, what I know, because I went through the CR1 process, is that the police report/ certificate, is often not required. Check first if they're asking.

To obtain the police report (federal level), your fiancee must have a letter asking for the report (Carta de Datos Registrales), from an authority office (USCIS, consulate). In my case, this police report wasn't required, it was mark as "unobtainable", still, I decided to get it; I went to the Mexican Consulate in Seattle, I had to submit my fingerprints (both hands), and wait about 10 days to process the letter. I went to Mexico, took the letter to the PGR office, just to find out the consulate had addressed the letter to the wrong department.

It is very absurd the process, we can't get the report directly. There is a report that is very easy to get, but is State-level only and that is not valid, it has to be the Federal-level.

I found a number where she can call and hopefully she can get more information.

Again, check first if you really need it, it's very hard to get. Good luck!

Thank you both for the information. I will forward the phone number to my fiancee in Mexico.

She will basically need a police clearance for every part of MEXICO where she has lived for longer than 6 months. IF SHE HAS LIVED OUTSIDE OF MEXICO for longer than 12 months she will need a police clearance from that location as well. Make sure they provide it in English or you will need to have it translated and need an appropriate certification.

They know where she has been due to her use of a passport and if you neglect to reveal this info... I suppose you will get RFE or denied.

This is taken directly from the USCIS instructions:

From which countries does an applicant need a police certificate?

IF the applicant

1) ...is living in their country of nationality at their current residence for more than 6 months AND is 16 years old or older THEN obtain the clearance from the police authorities of that locality.

2) ...lived in a different part of their country of nationality for more than 6 months AND was 16 years or older at that time THEN obtain the clearance from the police authorities of that locality.

3) ...lived in a different country for more than 12 months AND was 16 years or older at that time THEN obtain the clearance from the police authorities of that locality.

4) ...was arrested for any reason, regardless of how long they lived there AND was any age at that time THEN obtain the clearance from the police authorities of that locality.

It is my understanding that no police reports are needed in Mexico per a page on the state departments website. Mind you this could change, and you should just follow what is provided when she gets the list of documents needed for the interview. I wanted to get a leg up on researching this, and no one can seem to provide the details needed... then I came across this... scroll down to 10... https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/NVC%20AILA%20Meeting%20QAs_Nov2015.pdf

Please keep us posted on what she is told, but until I see something else published, I am going with this link, and maybe just get a municipal report before the interview date, just to be safe. The State and Federal ones are just too ridiculous to get. They are out of their minds to expect people to do it.

tab4768 -- Great document! Lots of great information on it. We are still waiting for the letter to arrive at my fiancee's home in Mexico with the specific interview preparation instructions and required form. I will let you know when it does and what it says.

Thank you

I am all for getting what is required, but when there are three different agencies, and one of them requires a trip to Mexico City, I find it ridiculous to just put out all the $ for something that has a 99% chance of not being asked for. I will be having my fiancé get the municipal report, and a copy of this page from the State Departments web site if there is no changes. They can not ask for something they already deemed not needed/required.

I look forward to hearing what it is that you have on your request. GOOD LUCK!!!!! :)

I hope you find an "X" next to the "Mexico Police Certificate" on the list of documents, the "X" means "This document is Unobtainable".

I also think is better to have more documents than those required... just in case!... and if you want to continue trying to get the police certificate, there are private parties that offer the service in Mexico City, so you don't need to go in person, just send the documents they need and a power of attorney (Carta poder simple). I found some companies online, some of these are tramitanetmexico.com , tramitesmexico.com and maybe tutramiteenmexico.com .. look at the price before you order, US$235!

Remember, to get the police certificate, you need a letter from an official agency requesting its issuance. wait until you get the package before the interview and check if you need it.

I also wonder where are all those who went through this process and are not sharing their experiences, it'd be nice if after they get the information they needed from this website, they come back and help others.

God luck to both of you.

Acajim.. I have been boggled by your last comment myself. I think in the last year, 4 people asked about Mexico police reports, and this has been the longest thread. Those all had 0 responses. With the number of Mexicans applying for K1's (I think the 3rd largest demographic), there should be LOADS of details and help...and there's not :(

Thank you for your response and additional details. I for 1 will not hire someone to get a report. That right there shows the complexity of the process. So sad!

All my best!

AmGe. Thank you. I tend to do things like that. Better to over prepare than leave things to chance.

I am hoping to get an update about what was asked from you regarding the police reports. It can really help those following in your footsteps.

PLEASE and THANK YOU!

Sorry for not replying sooner.  My fiancee went to the Agencia de Administracion Penetenciaria de Nuevo Leon in downtown Monterrey.  She asked for and received the letter for just a couple of pesos and in very short time.  During the interview they asked for many documents and only asked a few questions about her knowledge of me, my work, where I lived, etc. Since she does not have a criminal past there were zero questions about those topics nor the document she provided.

I hope this is helpful
