Ohhhhhh Fun Oklahoma Tornadoes

Fun-- weather in Okla we just had to go to the shelter downstairs tornado just west of here, now has moved more north of my work...

I don't know how you do it... one of my scariest 'tornadic moments' was in OKC...at night..

I think they're facinating and exciting until ...well until the sirens go off...

Just saw the news report about the tornados! Take care of yoruself. I'll take a hurricane any day over a tornado!

I didnt take laptop , i was back at my desk by then, my office is on NW 63rd the tornado hit directly west (a ways) on the same street watching now on the news, took out a couple houses, flipped a couple of cars, trees etc. Geez on the way home (driving) apparently a motorcycle had flipped the police had a body covered up....im GLAD to be home. Now the storms continue to move up from the South this time over my house......earlier the sirens had gone off...they are saying at least F2

We get quite of few down here, nothing compared to oklahoma, they are the king of tornadoes.

Glad it missed ya..hope no one's injured...I saw the storm(s) on the OKC radar...sheesh..lots of 'hook echos'... There was some minor stuff here, but no ginormous storms like what went through your area..

I just know me..I'd be one of those "I wanna see it" types (like in the movie Twister)....

Hey, they gotta go somewhere . . . and better Oklahoma than Arkansas . . . sorry, my family all lives in Northwest Arkansas!! Actually, my hometown, Ft. Smith, got clobbered by tornadoes a few years ago and most of the downtown area got wiped out! Sort of changed the flavor of the place, cause it was all the old buildings, sigh!!!

Hey, I hear some real high winds right now . . . we could be in for a fun night!

Hurricanes can also produce tornadoes that add to the storm's destructive power. Recall from the discussion on hurricane structure that tornadoes are most likely to occur in the right-front quadrant of the hurricane. However, they are also often found elsewhere embedded in the rainbands, well away from the center of the hurricane.

Some hurricanes seem to produce no tornadoes, while others develop multiple ones. Studies have shown that more than half of the landfalling hurricanes produce at least one tornado; Hurricane Buelah (1967) spawned 141 according to one study. In general, tornadoes associated with hurricanes are less intense than those that occur in the Great Plains (see the Fujita Intensity Scale). Nonetheless, the effects of tornadoes, added to the larger area of hurricane-force winds, can produce substantial damage.

We have no way at present to predict exactly which storms will spawn tornadoes or where they will touch down. The new Doppler radar systems have greatly improved the forecaster's warning capability, but the technology usually provides lead times from only a few minutes up to about 30 minutes. Consequently, preparedness is critical.

When associated with hurricanes, tornadoes are not usually accompanied by hail or a lot of lightning, clues that citizens in other parts of the country watch for.

Tornado production can occur for days after landfall when the tropical cyclone remnants maintain an identifiable low pressure circulation.

They can also develop at any time of the day or night during landfall. However, by 12 hours after landfall, tornadoes tend to occur mainly during daytime hours.
