Hello everyone!

As always you all are the most helpful and fantastic people, and have been such a wonderful blessing.

First a little update,..

Finally received confirmation that our package was received and the checks were cashed! Now begins the waiting game.

My Question,... at what point in the process would my wife be able to apply for a drivers license? The Mass RMV website requests a denial letter from the SSA. Should we apply for a SSN to receive the denial letter or is there some other number, point in the process, or something that we should do in order to work on a drivers license?

I truly appreciate you all taking the time to help us with this journey, Sincerely.

Agreed what Georgia said. Call your local dmv and ask what papers they want to see exactly. Good luck!

I still haven't got my license but From what I've read the rmvs website, They require not only the Ssn (or the denial letter for your wife's case) but also official immigration documents. If her i94 is still valid they might take that, but with a non immigrant visa in her passport I doubt they will issue one. Best to wait for her EAD.

Thanks so much everyone. She has her international drives license that is still valid for another year so there is no huge rush.

Thanks again!!

Be careful with that. Mass wont take that. I doubt she has an international license, she must have a PID and that won't work for her for long since she's no longer a visitor. The officer that interviewed me for aos did a double check for my names in one of his databases because he said a lot of Brazilians keep driving here without the proper documents and wanted to make sure I was on the clear

Edit: from the rmvs website:

Please note: An International Driving Permit cannot be converted to a Massachusetts Driver's License. An International Driving Permit does not confer any driving privileges but is a translation into ten major languages of the relevant information contained on the driver's home country license.

Not for legal and insurance purposes it isn't.

Yeah, I highly doubt her international drivers license is still valid. It won't be recognized on the insurance either. I wouldn't risk it if I was you, to let her drive. Try to get a state license ASAP with the right documentation if she wants to be able to legally drive.

She has her DL from home country and then she has a International drivers permit.

I have that too but ex. in GA law I could only drive 30 days after entry on that here then I would have to have GA DL but I can't get a GA DL before I get EAD.

So as others say be very carful.

I am in FL and from what I researched is need letter from SSN office that I have never been granted a SSN in the US along with proof that I resided at my address such as Utility bills. Went to SSN office and they gave me a letter stating that they are unable to advise on SSN status based on the information I provided. Not wanting to wait another 4hrs to argue and have them correct the wording of the letter, I proceeded to the DMV. DMV did not even look at the letter but confirmed that I did not have a SSN and reviewed the utility bills. My Canadian license was exchanged for a FL license valid for 1 year.

Rules are often different for people from Canada.

Looks like in MA you can drive on a valid foreign license for one year (if the country is in a specific list, which Brazil is). However, insurance can give you a major headache about it, and forget about registering a car to her name if you were to buy a new one.

So she'll have to pass the road test again but you may be better off waiting until she gets her EAD.

No, you can drive as a visitor for one year.

Massachusetts requires you to immediately transfer your license to that state for new residents.

Filing AOS sort of takes away your visitor status as far as I am aware.

^ It's correct what you're saying. International driver licenses are for visitors visiting international places, like the US. Once you move here, you're a resident and you will be required to have a state license. If your wife gets in a car accident, you're gonna have to pay full price.
