Yeah it could be an enlargement of the thyroids, this can be controlled by medication.

There are many causes of lumps in the neck. The most frequently seen lumps or swellings are enlarged lymph nodes, which can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, malignancy, and other rare causes.

Enlargement of the submandibular salivary glands (under the jaw) may result from infection or malignancy. Lumps in the muscles of the neck, almost always in the front of the neck and involving the sternocleidomastoid muscle, result from injury or torticollis. Lumps in the skin or just below the skin are often caused by cysts such as sebaceous cysts.

The thyroid gland may also produce a lump, multiple lumps, or swelling in the neck as a result of thyroid disease or malignancy. Most cancers of the thyroid gland are extremely slow growing and often curable by surgery even if they have been present for several years.

* Type

o Is it a firm lump?

o Is it a relatively soft, pliable bag-like (cystic) mass?

o Is it a painless bag-like (cystic) mass?

o Is the entire neck swollen?

* Where is it located?

* Time pattern

o Has it been increasing in size?

o Over how many months?

* What other symptoms are also present?

* Is there a rash?

* Is there difficulty breathing?

There are just too many things that it could be... stay calm.. wait for the tests... best thing possible to be done.

The neck thing may well turn out to be nothing, but at least he's having it checked out. I had swollen lymph nodes in 2005 and had to have exploratory surgery to rule out lymphoma. Luckily the tests came back clear.

Loving thoughts & prayers to you, sorry to hear of the stress. Sorry also to hear about hubby’s mom, that must be such an added emotional strain on him.

Probably your hubby is right, they docs are just trying to get their money’s worth. About 10 years ago I got a small lemon-sized hard lump on the side of my throat. It was quite noticeable and all were concerned. The docs wanted to do a biopsy but I didn’t want them to cut into anything so I refused. I didn’t even go back to the docs since then. After several months it just faded away on its own. Till date I don’t know what it was. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Oh Marilyn, I'm so sorry to hear this. Not that I think the neck thing will turn out to be anything...just the additional worry and wondering...you and your honey have certainly been through the wringer over the last year, and I so hope good things happen for you soon....you certainly deserve them to come your way anyyyyyy time now.
