Al-Qaeda link to Woolmer death

A MATCH-fixer said to have connections with an al-Qaeda fundraiser was last night linked to the murder of Bob Woolmer.

The Pakistan-based bookie was the man turfed out of the coach’s room after a blazing row, sources claimed.

They said the man, who disappeared after 58-year-old Bob’s killing, is an associate of Dawood Ibrahim, one of the world’s most feared gangsters who has terrorist links.

Ibrahim is wanted over al-Qaeda funding and a series of bomb attacks which left 250 dead in Bombay in 1993.

Intelligence officials who tour with the Indian cricket team said the bookie was at the World Cup in Jamaica with Anees Ibrahim, Dawood’s brother. Jamaican government officials said Pakistan players had told police of the row between their normally mild-mannered coach and the bookie.

Two players were said to have spoken of a furious bust-up in statements to cops. An official said: “Bob Woolmer said he had thrown a bookie out of his room.

“He didn’t give a reason.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields said: “This issue has come up before but we have so far been unable to substantiate it.

“But we are prepared to consider it further now we have names and more details. We will be investigating.”

The police chief asked for the report, from an Indian news source, to be emailed to his office in Kingston.

Ex-England batsman Bob was found strangled on the bathroom floor of his Pegasus Hotel room ten days ago.

Pathologist Dr Ere Seshiah yesterday hit back at rumours that he had botched Woolmer’s autopsy.

Asked if he was confident of his findings, Dr Seshiah said: “Yes, I took two hours and did a complete post mortem.” A second autopsy is still to take place.
