Short Term Health Insurance Suggestion

Hi! I arrived in Califonia in a K1 Visa. We got married last September 14, 2016. When my husband informed their company's HR about our marriage, his request to include me in his insurance got denied. Apparently, their guideline states that marriage should be reported within 30 days, which we missed. I will be automatically included in his insurance come January 2017. Now, we are looking for short term health insurance that will cover me for the rest of the year (November to December.)

Have you had experience with ***removed***, img, patriot and the likes? We have read a lot of bad reviews online about some companies not being compliant, which caused problems with tax filing. We are not sure if we have penalties by now but we want to avoid or at least lessen further penalties of not having health care insurance. Thank you :)

They are not Ocare compliant.

Check to see if you can get OCare.

Open enrollment for Ocare is coming up in November, and you are more than eligible to sign up. For California residents, you'd be using Covered California, which is the state exchange. You may cancel it at any time. Keep in mind short term insurances are not federally compliant and considered substandard, so the only way you'll have proper coverage that will exclude you from a penalty is to use a compliant one - either through the exchange or purchased from a insurance company privately.

Thank you all for your reply :) I was rejected in CoveredCa. I didn't apply for online short term insurance, as they are indeed Obamacare non-compliant according to the state insurance counselors I talked to personally. I applied for KP, got their $255/month Silver plan and will cancel it as soon as I get included in my husband's insurance. Thanks again!

Hi,

Really worried here as I did not read up on the rules / fines etc imposed on residents.

I had travel insurance that covered me until beginning of October as a safety net whilst I was out here.

Now I'm a GC holder since early Ictober too as it happened I'm scared of getting a fine. Is it too late for me to get insurance to avoid the fine??

I know people will say it's up to you to find out but I have zero information in regards to eggs I must to in complying to health I durance how to file taxes etc from USCIS. they can't expect us to know everything and health ins and tax a pre very important topics.

I want to warn others to look at this quickly and not make the same mistake as me!

Is the 60 day rule throughout the USA?

Hi there, it's currently open enrollment for Obamacare, so I'd suggest looking into that soon, you are more than eligible with a green card. In addition you could also purchase insurance from any company that supplies in your state privately, just google around. Or you can obtain it through your spouse's work/your own job if you have it. I'm not sure what you mean by a 60 day rule. For the most part, trying to obtain Obamacare without some sort of documentation will be futile, so the earliest attempt an immigrant could put in an application would be when they have an NOA1 for their AOS, or EAD, or green card. It is unlikely you will pay a penalty, and if even it were the case, it would be fairly nominal. As I said it's currently open enrollment, and this lasts for a limited time, so go to the federal or state exchange website and have a look around at the rules (the link is in my signature). You could even call them. Temporary insurances and travel insurances do not count. Please understand, the penalty is not a fine. It is, for the ease of explaining it, (and not in the exact term) a tax. You will not get in any legal trouble for not having health insurance, and there are no consequences to not having any, except for the obvious health reasons. Plenty of people go without insurance because the penalty to pay is cheaper than having a monthly premium. Unfortunately, the government does not explain the law to immigrants, and they barely explain it to their citizens, for that matter.

Yes open enrolment for 2017, however I was talking about 2016 --> life event allowing to add insurance within 60 days if going through the "exchange". The fine is 2.5% of household income from what I hear to it will be quite a bit!

Hence urgently trying to find insurance to last until Dec 31st. After that will be on spouse policy.

We were too late to add to wife's insurance as we weren't aware of the healthcare issue with the fine / tax (still costing us $$$ whatever the name).
