EAD stamp/SSN

Hi everyone, I need a little clarification from someone who has been there, done it and wore the t-shirt please.

My POE was at Las Vegas on 1st March '07, and my passport and I-94 were stamped with "Employment Authorised". I have been told that if I have employment authorisation that I can apply for my Social Security Number?

Anyway, I filled in the correct SSN forms, took all my identification that they asked for, waited for 2 hours at the Government Office, then was sent away as they don't accept the stamp in my passport or on the I-94 as Employment Authorisation.

So what exactly does that stamp mean??

Is it basically giving me permission to apply for EAD? If so, why does it say "authorised"?

The lady at the Government Office didn't know the answers to any of my questions, and said that she has never seen the stamp before, and that I could have written it myself. She sent me away and told me to fill in the I-765 for an Employment Authorisation Card, come back once I had done that........then wait another 2 hours in line!

Is this right? Or did I get someone who just didn't have a clue what they were talking about?

Thanks ~ Andie

Hi,

My husband had the exact stamp you do and we did use that to apply for his social security number. We had NO problems. Sounds like you got someone who doesn't know what they are doing. I would call and ask again. Good luck!

The lady at the government office is correct. Go to this link in the guides and scroll down to the section For K2, K3, K4 Visa Holders....

Well that sucks! How come if you are already married to a US citizen (K3) you can't use the stamp, but if you have a K1 visa you can? I wonder what their logic is with that one? hmmmmm maybe it's the $180 fee <_<
