London Medical Question re: mental health

Hi All,

So I'll be having my medical in London soon (hopefully) and I've been reading some stuff on people being turned away based on mental health?? I have mild depression and anxiety (relating to a car accident) and am currently taking 20mg Citalopram since Feb 2016. Will this be a problem? My depression is under control with the medication, I have a job, have gone on holidays, and am a perfectly functional member of society. In fact, I am going to my GP soon to start to ween off the citalopram - I'll be put on 10mg and then slowly reduce from there if all goes well. I understand I have to answer all the questions truthfully at the medical, but how much will they want to go into this? Is it necessary to get a note from GP regarding it - and if so, what should it say? Any insight into this would be amazing!

Thank you

A) You need to be honest on your medical.

B) You need a letter from your GP describing your condition and how it is successfully being treated. Specifically, it needs to state that you "are not a threat to yourself or others".

C) You will be fine.

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.

Thank you! Of course I plan on being completely honest. I was more so wondering how the questions will go - I assume I will have to state what medications I'm on, and that they'll ask why I'm on citalopram. Other than that, though, how in-depth should I expect it to go? If I am successful with going off my medication will they ask only what I am currently taking or what I have taken say, in the past six months?

I will get a letter from my GP definitely, though. Hopefully they will cooperate (I go to a GP that doesn't give a ####### about mental illness).

The most important thing is the letter from you GP stating you are not a safety risk - this is what they are concerned about. They will also evaluate your behaviour at the medical interview to verify this statement. You will have to fill out a questionnaire that asks about a multitude of diseases and medication, including mental issues. They do ask about both past and present conditions. Just be honest and up front with the doctor, they appreciate that. I can't tell you exactly how in-depth the doctor in London will go, but be prepared to talk through every aspect of your illness and treatment.

Amazing, thank you. This is what I expected, but I just freaked out a bit. I'm sure I'll be fine, I'll just be sure to get a note from my GP and be upfront. Thank you!
