How long did it take you?

Hi all,

I received my SSN about 3 weeks ago, and anything I apply for comes back that my identity couldn't be verified. I understand it might take a while for me to start being registered in some systems, but how long did it take you?

What are you applying for exactly?


If you're applying for credit cards or loans of that sort, even with a social you may need to have it longer to be recognized. Do you have ANYTHING else in your name other than having a SSN?


Any credit checks for my husband kicked back as him not having an identity established. He had SSN, Texas DL, bank account, pretty much everything but bills in his name.

I applied for a checking account through Bank of America online, and they stated they needed further identification and I had to go to a branch. Similar thing, I applied for a Mobil gas card to start building credit, came back as saying I don't have any accounts by which to verify me. I am named on my wife's checking account, so I'm not completely out of the system.

I would suspect it is also because you don't have a credit report.

Easy solution to this is opening a secured credit card. We did that with my husband and about two months later his credit report was established and he now has a high score.

Yeah, you can do a secured card or do what we did. We added my husband to my checking account when he first got here in Dec 15, after him being on the account so long, the bank had eventually put an offer up for a credit card for him, one of the cards that you qualify for if you checking account gets X or more dollars a month. We weren't sure if he'd actually get it, so we saved some money for a secured card. The lady we talked too told us to go ahead and apply for one of the basic cards, since their system was showing that he qualified for one of the betters. Luckily, due to good history and consistent deposits with the bank, the bank approved an unsecured card for him without using ANY of my credentials.

Secured is the easiest and quickest way, just make sure you save some money, ours would have required a min 250$ COD on the secured card.
