I wanted to share my experience with the social security office. My husband arrived in the US on Oct. 14th. We went to the social security office Tuesday Oct. 18th. When our number was called and we went up and told the rep. that my husband is a new immigrant and we wanted to check on his social. I know it was a bit too soon to check, but glad we went. The rep. gave us an application to fill out. I told him that when my husband filled out his visa application online he did check the box to have his social mailed automatically. (I logged back into ceac to double check if the option was check and it was!) What the rep. said is that rarely happen, only about 10% of the time. So it's best to come in the office to fill out the application. So my husband fill out the application and we left. Today in the mail his social arrived!!! Less than a week after he applied!!!?

My advice is to not wait for the social to come in the mail because it might not arrive. Go to the office and check on the status asap!

Lots of people get their SSN automatically by ticking the box on the DS-260, far more than 10%. It's just that some people tick the box and then don't have the patience to actually let them process it. I mean they have to get your application once you POE, process it and then send it out. It takes 5 to 14 days after POE, which I think is pretty darn fast. You can't expect someone to have the application processed, a SSN assigned, a card printed and sent out in one business day.

This has nothing to do with "patience" I know multiply persons that waited out the 2 weeks even 3 weeks and their social didnt arrived. I am speaking from my own experience from speaking with others that have recently gone through this phase. I dont see anything wrong with stopping by and checking. I would rather stop by and check rather than sit home for weeks waiting for something that may or may not arrive. This entire process is lengthy enough. ?

Also the 10% theory came from the Rep that processed the application. I would think he has the experience with this than you and I. Don't know if he was telling the truth, but from me personally speaking with others after their POE it could be a fact. The rep. told me of persons that came in months after their POE to inquire about their social and they did "check the box" so as I said before nothing is wrong with just checking ?
