Converting to Islam

Has anyone ever converted to Islam in the US? How do you do it? I mean...in Indonesia they would just ask you to come to the mosque, do a few minutes of counseling, do the conversion, sign some papers and that's it.

Does anyone know where to do it around Virginia Beach/Norfolk?

I appreciate your help guys, but uhm..pls pls stay on topic...just asking how and where!

Hehe..I've actually found that site before and talked to the person conducting the conversion... but, I had one question. In my country when you convert, you'll get a certificate. Wouldn't you get one in the US? The person I talked to said that they don't give you such certificates when you convert in the US...I wonder if that's true.

If the mosque does not have certificates, they can always write you a letter on official stationery to put the information regarding conversion.

Converting is as simple as saying shahada and believing what you have said. There is no paper involved.

When we married in Jordan, the shiek before putting my religion as Islam on our certificate, asked me to pray al fatiha with him and our witnesses. It was a nice moment.

So to answer your question as to how and where, say shahada and believe it and you can do it at home.

You are welcome! I know it could come in handy for all kinds of things back home in Indonesnia, for getting a visa to Saudi, for registering at the Indonesia consulate in the US etc. So probably a not a bad idea to have one handy!

Yah, the reason why asked about the certificate thingie, is because in Indonesia they would actually ASK about it when they see that the person claiming as a muslim is...well...a foreigner. Especially for islamic marriage, they would want to be sure that the person really did convert.

I'll try to find your fiancee. I need to ask her how she did it, so I can prepare my fiance. He is extremely concern, because he is in the navy and he travels all the time. Said that he needs to learn how to pray first before being able to get the certificate....learning how to pray can take months, since he's not used to arabic wordings/prayers.....i learned how to pray when i was a lil kid, so i memorize better =/. The thing is, our wedding should be around May...not much time left!!

Not here, but as the wife being the one who converted, it wasn;t an issue. I would have it just to be sure.

Your fiance does not need to learn all his prayers or meet any standard before he wil be allowed to convert so tell him not to worry about learning all that before getting the certificate! At most mosques he can pick up a audio cassette called Memorizing Prayers. It has all the prayers in arabic and the pronunciaton is very slow for the non-arabic speaker to understand. There are also childrens coloring books with the prayers transliterated in to the English alaphabet - so each page is is block letters "spelled out" what to say. He can even color in each phrase as he learns it

well.. I actually had been converted for a while... BUT in egypt when I got Married they did not accept my papers from America SO i had to say the shahada at Al Ahzar.. AGAIN.. It was cool having a shahada paper from Al Ahzar.. BUT i was Ticked cause I had be living as a Muslim for quite some time!!
