W-7 Tax Form

My wife got a certified copy of her passport at the US embassy in Kampala the other day. Once she made it through the security gauntlet (who from personal experience can be quite rude), she said the person she dealt with was quite pleasant. She had to wait about an hour and a half for someone to help her once inside.

It cost $30 for the first copy and $20 for each additional copy (I asked her to make two copies, just in case)

She's sending it express, hopefully I'll get it by tax day.

I had the opportunity to go to the American Consulate in Paris recently to get a W-7 form processed, and my wife's paccport copy notarized. While waiting in line, I saw a sign on the wall stating something like, " For W-7 form information, call this number", and as there was a phone near the sign I called the number. As it turned out, there was an IRS office in Paris and I was told to go there to get a W-7 form processed. The one thing that I did not take into consideration, was that the IRS tax expert informed me that I had to file my 2006 taxes through their office in Paris. Since I filed for an extension no trouble, plus I paid nothing for the service. They used only the photo page of my wife's passport and cared nothig about all the other pages I copied.
