My husband and I are filing our I-751 this week. My greencard is set to expire on Dec. 12th of this year. We're planning to visit my parents in Europe this Christmas, but now that my greencard will most likely be expired by the time we go, I'm a bit concerned about getting back into the US.

I understand we'll get a NOA once the I-751 is filed. Will the NOA and my expired GC be enough to let me back into the country?

I'm also concerned about the flight back from Europe to the US. Will they let me on the flight with an expired GC? I've searched on Google and read that you can get an I-551 stamp to prove that you're a permanent resident. Is this something I should be looking into?

Thank you for any help!

Please don't worry. Once you file for ROC on your green card you will get a letter in the mail saying that your green card is automatically extended for another year while your ROC is processing. When you travel just make sure you carry your green card and the extension letter with you. My wife did that last year when we traveled to the Philippines and it was fine. So don't worry.

The only time you might have a bit of a question is when you check in to your returning flight. Your flag says you are Dutch - if so, you'll have no issues. Sometimes people who are flying second/third tier airlines, or who are from some countries get a person at the flight counter who doesn't understand how the Green-Card-plus-NOA works.

If your ticket agent starts to huff and puff, just gently ask for their supervisor. If you have a letter, USCIS does not want to stamp your passport. It's usually when you've filed your paperwork and your EXTENSION is close to expiring that you will make an appointment and get a stamp.

My husband (Non USC) has been traveling for 6 months abroad (just this past month he went to 5 different countries) with his expired GC and NOA letter with no issues. He says the biggest problem is when landing the in the USA the officers try to send you to the kiosk but the kiosks don't work with expired GCs. Once you make it to an actual person it goes fine.
