Has anyone recently, not from Canada, gone through the process of getting a driver license in New York City.

Did they really take your drivers license from your home country?

Were you really required to go to a sit down class for 5 hours for that pre-licensing course?

How long after getting the permit did you have to wait for a road test?

I've been reading the info on the website...Any other tips on how to navigate the DMV? I plan to go there but I don't want to go and waste half a day to find out I have to go back. Any advice I will appreciate... or point me in the right direction. Thanks

Since NY city has a wide subway, bus, taxi and train system most in NYC do not get driving license as very expensive to keep a car (parking, insurance and all)

even a man who worked for telephone company and came upstate to work didnt have a license and had to get one

now, yes, you have to surrender the out of country or out of state license, get a learner's permit, study the handbook, take the written test and eye test and then schedule a road test

not easy and for many not worth it unless living outside the city

ask your spouse about this

in upstate and out on the island you need a license but right in the city, no

It looks like you can be proactive and not have the foreign license destroyed, but you have to ask on the spot:

https://dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/drive-new-york-state

When you pass your road test, you will be required to surrender your foreign driver license to the DMV road test examiner. The local DMV office will destroy your foreign driver license after 60 days. If you plan to return to your home country and will need your foreign driver license, ask the road test examiner how to make sure that your foreign driver license is not destroyed.

Be sure to update after you finish all of this, so others will know how it turned out!

My husband drives every day and I've also been driving since I've been here but thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the answer on the other questions as well. Do you know about the classroom 5 hour pre-licensing course?

Oh I missed that part of the instructions! Thanks a lot. Hmm I wonder if anyone has been successful lol I would certainly not want to have to go through the process of getting a new license from my home country when I visit that would be a nightmare.

Will certainly update when I am done

What happen if you just say you don't have a foreign license or you left it in your home country ??

good question. Lol I guess that is also an option because there is no benefit to having a drivers license from a foreign country. So no need to tell them you have it. Hmmm

I'm not sure if things have changed but in the past, NY DMV would allow you to take the written and if you pass, they give you a NY license without a road test. This is going back 20 years, sorry, don't have recent info.

If you have to go through everything from scratch, don't even tell them that you are licensed in another country.

Thanks a lot. I'm hoping I dont have to do everything from scratch.

I don't see how they can confiscate and destroy anything that's the property of another country's government.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
