Trump and immigration concerns

I have seen some people on these forums concerned about how Trump's immigration policy would affect legal immigration and specifically their own personal cases. I understand that viewpoint because my wife and step son are in the process of immigrating to the US from the Philippines.I have had my family tell me things like "you better get them here before Trump gets in". My wife has friends who have immigrated to the US already and they are telling her in effect the same thing.

I think there is a huge misconception about Trump's immigration policies largely due to the media playing little sound bites of him talking about illegal aliens and not playing the whole speech where he addresses legal immigration. Trump has clearly stated more than once he wants to streamline the process and make it easier for legal immigrants. No one who has gone through the process or is in the middle of the process as my family is now can deny there is a lot of room for improvement and streamlining. I have often wondered on what are they spending the thousands of dollars in fees we have to pay in the process when things take so long. Most of you know you are asked for the same information through out the process more than once by different departments. It is totally inefficient. Most of the things they ask for could be submitted online and processed by computers saving time and probably money (but that would eliminate do nothing cushy government jobs).

I don't know for sure if this is true or not but when I started my process before I decided to rely on the awesome people here at VisaJourney to help me do things myself I spoke with a few immigration lawyers. More than one of them when outlining the timeline for the whole process commented that things on average used to go faster before Obama became president and blamed part of it on the influx of illegal aliens and "refugees" into the system.

I don't agree with what Trump is saying about building a wall on the border (there are more efficient ways to defend our border). I think this is just meant to appeal to the far right and a way of putting in layman's terms that he wants to defend our border. Overall his immigration policies are good enough to be supported by ICE and US Customs which have never endorsed a candidate in the past. Probably because they are sick of Obama tying their hands when they try to do their job.

Let me ask you all a question. What do you think will happen to already slow processing times at USCIS and the NVC if Hillary gets in and implements her amnesty plans? They will become abysmal. I am upset that people who violate the law and come here illegally get the red carpet rolled out for them while those of us who do things the legal way have to jump through hoops and pay thousands of dollars only to be told to wait and wait some more. You all should be upset too.

I know a lot of you get emotional and worry when hearing the sound bites on TV of Trump talking about immigration. I get it because I worry every day about getting my family through the process and what road blocks we will have to deal with next. I just ask you to look at the full context of Trump's policies and come to a logical conclusion without allowing emotions to cloud your judgement. Trump is not going to end legal immigration or even make it more difficult. He may even streamline things and make the process faster for many people.

I love this so much. You ask us a question, tell us the answer, and somehow we're still wrong because we're not upset enough.

You should post in CEHST more often.

Asking a rhetorical question (and then providing an answer) for the sake of argument is one of the oldest debate tropes in the book.

He also didn't say "upset enough," he merely said you should be as upset and he is. Let's not distort other people's words. That's the mass media's job! :reading:

You can disagree with his opinion, but I honestly don't see anything wrong with the way he phrased it.

You're going to have to help me out here.

If, as you said, he feels I should be as upset (as he is). And I'm not "as upset". Wouldn't that mean that I'm not upset enough?

This all reminds me of "that depends on what the meaning of the word is is"

I suppose you're right, sorry for that. But still, nothing wrong with the good ol' rhetorical question style argument. If he wants you to be as upset as he is, that seems valid to me as well. Half the time anyone who is arguing anything wants to you agree/see it their way/feel what they feel. So, it still seems valid to me! Again, you can disagree with his opinion, but the presentation was pretty by-the-book in terms of arguments. Unless VJ has it's own rules.

trump is a guy thats never had to wait in line for anything. he certainly hasn't had to wait in line and figure the ins and outs of legal immigration. like all the others, trumps policies on immigration are lip service.

logically, if giving blanket amnesty is going to force everyone legally attempting immigration to back of the line - deporting 11 million people and booting folks from terror affiliated countries isn't going to do a damn thing for legal wait times either.
