Received my packet 3 for my K1 visa a while ago and am trying to finish everything up:

1) What kind of police check do I need? I've never been convicted of any crimes. On my local police website they offer Criminal record check and the police information check. I've been reading that some people got their certificates same day. I called today and asked about it and the lady was very snarky with me. I still have no idea which one I need? I've read that some people have gone to Commissionaires...has anyone ever had any issues using a certificate from there as opposed to the police station? Do I just ask for CPIC?

2) For the proof of domicile, my fiance lives at home still with his parents. When I leave, we will be living with them until I can find a job and we can get our own place. He isn't on the lease and he doesn't pay any of the utilities there. What type of things can we use to prove he lives there? I know a copy of his drivers licence, any other thoughts?

3) I already completed the DS-160 and got the confirmation email. There were I think 2 sections where I had to write my fiance's given names. In the first space I wrote his first and middle name and in the second one I accidentally forgot to put his middle name in. Will this be a big deal? I haven't emailed anything to the consulate yet, just got the confirmation. I've read that some people just completely redo the form and get a new receipt number etc. Should I do that to be safe?

4) For the DS-160 I didn't realize you could just take a picture of yourself and it didn't need to be passport style so I went out and got 2 passport photos taken. When I go to my interview, is it okay if the 2 passport pictures I bring and the picture on my ds-160 are the same?

5) Since I don't have my police certificate yet, but will in about a week or 2 will it be okay to email the consulate my checklist before I have all the documents in hand?

thank you!

I am too looking for the answers to these packet 3 questions. I went and got a regular police name check that searched the "Canadian Police information Center / National Repository for Repository of Criminal Records" because that's what my research on forums and such told me is good enough for a "non hit" person. I figured hell if it's the wrong one I'll just go get another one that's right. I was able to get it on the spot and pay with my CC for it. As for Proof of Domicile I was able to find on a US government page that a photo copy of the US petitioners passport would work. But something tells me that's not enough..

Did you go to your local police station to get that? When I called she said I had to get a criminal record check and it would take 2 weeks, which didn't seem right. I called commissionaires and they said they did CPIC which is what I read I was supposed to ask for and she said it was done in a day or two so I'm planning to go there.

Hi Klee,

I used "commisionnaires" service in the past and highly recommend them.

Really fast and good service.

Thanks! Did you just get the CPIC? I read that I don't need to be finger printed at all so I just want to be sure!

also, does anyone have any advice in regards to my DS-160 form question? Should I redo it and get a new confirmation number? I really want to send off the email as soon as possible!

I'm confused about this as well. I went on the Toronto police website and filled out my information, paid a fee of $20 to get a police clearance check. Was this the right thing to do? It has taken about 3 weeks to obtain it, I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Yes I did. I live in Edmonton and they actually have a detachment which like 80% of it's purpose is to do criminal checks. I called the RCMP and they could do it as well and it takes 3-5 business days. But you require a special chq from your bank addressed to a specific government office (can't remember the name) for it to be paid for. As far as a name check goes don't you need Canadian Police information Center (CPIC) as well as National Repository for Repository of Criminal Records?

Anyone have an answer for that domicile question?

1. I live in Calgary, and went to Calgary Police Service and got a PIC done. It took a few weeks, but it was exactly what the consulate was looking for.

2. Exact same situation here. We used his drivers' license, as well as the bill of sale for his car and his paystubs from work. It's all he had to prove he was domicile at his parents address, as his name isn't on any of the utilities. No problem with these documents.

3. Do not redo the DS-160.

4. Yes.

5. I wouldn't recommend you do this. Again I was in the same situation and I waited out until I got the police certificate in hand before submitting the Packet 3 checklist. I got Packet 4 a couple days later, but there's technically nothing stopping you from submitting the checklist sooner.
