Questions about How to Get Green Card in Married Name [split topic]

Hi all, I would like to get my greencard in married name too, i.e. take my husbands last name. I haven't yet officially used my husbands last name. Do i need to change my passport and ssn before i remove conditions on greencard and ask for it to be with my married last name or is it fine if i do both simultaneously. I dont see anywhere that i have to submit passport when i file i751- any guidance would be appreciated

You need to change your name legally. Do you have any marriage documents where it states that you've taken your husband's last name?

I would change your SSN and have a SSN card with your married name on it.

I would probably also change driver's license and passport so that everything matches the name you want on your new green card, so your ID documents match the name you are requesting on your application.

Also, fill out the application I-751 with your married name, then in previous names / other names, put your maiden last name on the form.

The marriage certificate is your legal name change document. It does not have to list the name you wish to use after you are married. Many states only list your name at the time you marry. That does not matter. You could have begun using your married name as soon as you were married. There is no changing it 'officially' other than presenting your marriage certificate to change your name on SSN, IDs and accounts.

You can change the name on your IDs and SSN at the same time. Use your marriage certificate to change your name on those and fill out your I-751 in your married name, list maiden name where it asks. No instructions for name change with the I-751, so you could include a note about now using your married name on your cover letter and include copy of marriage certificate to provide your legal name change document.
