Do I need to cancel my greencard if applying for B2 Tourist Visa ?

Hi,

My grandmother got her Greencard in 2002 and left USA in 2006 with a re-entry but never returned. So, its been almost 10 years(8 years with re-entry). Now, her daughter wants to see her and she wants to go and visit her in USA. The question is does she need to cancel her Greencard before applying for B2 Tourist Visa or its assumed abandoned and not required ? Is there any way to even cancel quickly cos she wants to visit her this December ?

After all this time she most certainly has abandoned her green card/resident status. Unless she can prove that circumstances beyond her control prevented her from returning (hospitalised for the entire time, for example).

Yes, she would likely be required to officially surrender her green card at the embassy by filling an I-407 before they would be able to consider her visa application.

After so long, her residency is certainly long gone.
