What are the financial requirements for sponsoring an immigrant?

My fiancé is Japanese, and we want to get married and live in the US as soon as possible, but I'm currently a college student (graduating in December) and will be continuing to work as a full time waitress to meet the income requirements of $20,025 a year, but I was wondering how long it would take for them to count my income? We were trying to get everything in place so we could start the visa process next year but because of me going to school until the end of this year it doesn't seem like we will be able to financially...I would really appreciate any advice...

We've considered my immigrating to Japan instead because the visa process seems easier and quicker there, but I have to take care of my mother and we're not sure if we'll be able to get a visa for her in Japan...

Most of the time, the Embassy asks for proof of your income and that is usually in the form of the amount you paid in taxes. Did you file taxes for last year's income? If not, you can always get a co-sponsor. I got my father to co-sponsor, and he turned in his tax returns. They accepted them easily and had no complaints. If you have someone who could be a co-sponsor, then the amount of your income will not be as important.

I don't have anyone who could be a co-sponsor, and I didn't start working until May of this year...

Do you know how many years tax forms would be required?

When we filed for mine, I had started working in April of this year. I work as a freelancer online so I don't have regular pay or anything. I wrote a letter explaining why I did not file taxes. My father then submitted one year of tax returns with his I-134 as our co-sponsor.

Co-sponsor may be best way to go unless you can wait to submit the I-129F until say January, that way possibly by time it gets to the interview stage you would have been working for 5-6 months.
