Considering China's actions in the South China Sea, I would think that the Philippines would want nothing to do with China.

But I think Duterte's hatred of the US is greater than his love of the Philippines.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has announced his "separation" from the United States, declaring that it had "lost" and that he had realigned with China as the two agreed to resolve their South China Sea dispute through talks.

Duterte is being practical here. China has more to offer ( $17.6 billion in trade deals) than US right now.

I agree. As I said anyone who has been to the Philippines knows the business influence China has there. The SM mall chain immediately comes to mind.

I disagree that China has more to offer. When you consider the trade deals, OFW remittances, disaster relief, and add in the fact China has been the cause of the dispute in the West Philippine Sea, I think he is making a poor decision.

If China and Philippines can find a win-win solution for themselves, why should US - the 3rd party complain?

I'm not concerned about this as a US citizen; I'm honestly concerned with how this affects my family over there. I want this to be a win win; I just don't trust China at all.

If they ally themselves with China that's fine by me. It's not a smart move in my opinion, but they can do whatever they want being a sovereign nation. Just don't complain about it when it doesn't work out. Heck maybe folks from the Philippines will find China more desirable to immigrant to than the US, since their President despise the US so much. I guess we may find out in the near future.
