Biometrics Appointment & Married Name Change

If you have applied for your AOS in your married name, bring a copy of your marriage certificate to your biometrics appointment. Though they do not specify it in the "You Must Bring" section of the appointment letter, it is required to show the legal name change from your K1 visa.

I applied for my AOS in my married name and all my id was in my maiden name. I did bring my marriage certificate and tried to show it to them at the biometrics appointment, but they didn't want to see it (which I found odd), but it's probably a good idea for anyone with a name change to bring it with them.

HELLO--FOLLOW UP QUESTION: What exactly do you mean when you say you applied for your AOS ...what about your G-325A and your I-130? Did you also use your married name? Do you know of any other resouces on this topic?

Like for example, I've heard that it does actually give a good impression to do the name change because it gives some credibility to the relationship. I want to do it eventually but I'm thinking about working on it now if it would contribute to giving a positive impression to those reading our visa application. On the other hand, I do not want it to complete things. Thank you! Phoebe

Yes, totally agree.....

When I went for my biometrics, I was asked to show a proof that I was allowed to use my husband's last name (on the app. letter, it was my married name, but on my ID, it was my maiden name). I didn't have anything to prove though, but fortunately, she asked her boss and they were all ok.

Sure wish they'd done that for me. I had to drive another 2 hours there and back to go and pick mine up. :(

Yes, I also used my married name on the G-325A. I'm in a different visa category than you are so there was no I-130. Maybe they'll have the answer in the CR1 section?

Where was that person when I needed them?

Quick question. Was everyone given back their stamped original appointment letter? I'm not used to them returning things to me. :P

Hi Phoebe,

I entered my married name on the G-325A and the I-130, we filed them all at the same as the I-485 application. I don't know if it can cause issues when applying for a visa though. I have since been able to have my Canadian passport amended to show my married name, but I needed to provide them some proof that I use my married name now (I used my health insurance card and bank card).

Ooo, thanks for bringing that up Jane. I was wondering about the Canadian passport name change also. Did you go in person to get it changed? I'm wondering because you mention you used your health insurance and bank cards as proof. Thanks very much.

I had mine amended at the Canadian Consulate in Boston. I just emailed them and they set up a time for me to come in and have it done.

Here is a link that has the contact information for all the Canadian Consulates. http://www.voyage.gc.ca/main/foreign/forde...w_client-en.asp

If there isn't one close enough to you, you can have it changed by filing out a form and mailing the passport and supporting documents (along with the $12.00 fee) to passport Canada.

Hope this helps.
