What banks are lpr friendly?? I've read that some banks give lpr a hard time when setting up a account and I'm trying to avoid all of them if possible so my husband won't feel discriminated against. Sorry for so many questions I like to think ahead and get everything ready before we make our journey home

No bank should discriminate against you for being a lpr.

They will ask for your identification (green card + SSN) and that should be it.

Anyways, Wells Fargo is known for being an easy bank when it comes to foreigners. They will probably just ask for your passport (from your original country).

I think it's fascinating how different banks treat you differently.

When I was here as an Au Pair I had no issues opening a bank account with Capital One with just my passport and CSN.

Then after officially moving here on a K1 I wanted to open an account with Bank Of America because my husband has an account there and we also wanted to get a joint account. They gave me more hassle because I didn't have a Green Card back then and they didn't really understand the whole "I'm waiting for my Green Card" thing. They finally gave me an account though but it took a while :P

So yeah, I would check with Capital One and you might want to stay away from Bank of America.

Bank of America I've used them in the past and would never use them again also td. I'm funny with banks and if I get a bad feeling about one I withdrawal my money and close immediately especially if money goes missing and they "have no idea why". It actually happened 2 different times with Bank of America so I'll never use them again. Thanks for your help

Seriously? Your money just disappeared? Wow, I'm definitely letting my husband know about this. That's insane.

This was many years ago but I'll always hold it against them. There was no withdrawals from the account no purchases it just vanished. I guess the money had a mind of its own

I also had bad experiences with Bank of America many years ago. Never any cases of missing money, it was mostly just the really poor customer service.

I'm using USAA now, which is great but limited to US military families and their family members. I've heard credit unions are good and trustworthy, have you tried looking into one?

Oh yes they have very poor attitudes and are very snobby In my eyes. My favorite bank was actually a credit union, when my mother worked at ESPN but since she no longer worked there I was forced to close my account. After that I started using Bank of America and ever since then I never found a bank I was really satisfied with

When I first got here, I opened an account with Chase bank. It was ok until i tried to get a credit card and they wouldn't even give a guaranteed card..so I closed my account with them and Capital One welcomed me with a $300 credit line which I used to build my credit and after 6 month they increased the limit to $1500. When you are new, most banks don't want to touch you but after a while and you have a bit of credit history, they all start sending you unsolicited credit cards. So Capital One or small Credit Unions in your area should sort you out.

Capital One is definitely one of the easiest places to get a credit card. Just don't open/apply for too many new credit cards all at once, as it'll bring down your score a bit.

How soon after you came to USA did you get your capital one card ?? I was really looking for a joint account as well but do you think they let me and my husband open a account with my ss# until we get his # ? I was really hoping for Wells Fargo but would also consider chase. As stated before Bank of America is a no go

I didn't get Capital One until after Chase turned me down which was after a few months down the road. In Texas you can walk into a branch and ask but I don't know which state you are in but give them a call and find out. I don't see why they shouldn't allow you to use your SSN until his comes. I found them quite lenient.
