Just curious what insurance my husband can apply for until he gets it through his work ?? I'm sure this question was asked before but I can't find it anywhere. I know he can't go on government assistance and wasn't sure if he's eligible for Obamacare or if that's considered gov asst?? What is considered gov asst when it comes to lpr ??

I've been with him since March in his country I will need to reapply when I'm back but will probably just get on state insurance because I due in December and won't be working until after I have her

You can purchase insurance through your state or federal exchange (O'care). Open enrollment is coming up in November.

You can also purchase a plan privately through any insurance company that offers in your state.

Medicaid/Medicare is off limits to an LPR for five years. Obamacare is perfectly fine, provided you can pay for it or if not, pay the penalty.

Thank you so much. He has a job lined up already but can't start working until we get his ss# but I know it can take 6 months or more for him to get insurance through his job. I also thought ocare and Medicare were the same thing but I'll definitely look into that

I'd love to know what you found out about Ocare and Medicaid. I'll also be arriving in NY and need insurance. I'm currently trying to find a private plan but I'm not sure which companies are trustworthy/legit.

Medicaid does not have an insurer Government funded.

Ocare private insurers tend to be limited so not a lot of choice.

Just FYI, he can still work without a SSN, he just can't get paid. You usually get insurance the 1st of the month after you start work, so if he starts working November 5th, his insurance will usually start December 1st. That's been my experience anyway.

BlueCross BlueShield is really good, at least in Texas. You can use the marketplace to shop around for insurance and compare different companies to find what fits best for you and your husband.
