Emergency AP

God forbid anyone needs to apply for emergency AP but here is the process if you do:

  1. Schedule an interview through InfoPass (http://infopass.uscis.gov) and choose the option "I wish to speak with an immigration officer".
  2. On the day of your appointment, bring your completed I-131 Application for Travel Document and a money order made payable to the US Department of Homeland Security. (They will not accept personal checks.) Don't forget your passport-style photographs.
  3. Leave your cell phone in your car.
  4. Provide evidence of your emergency and be ready to explain the situation.
  5. They will call you when the travel document is ready. (I was told one or two business days but it was ready the next morning.) Only the applicant may pick up the package. They will not give it to anyone else.
  6. Know your A# or bring a document with you which shows your A#.

Please keep in mind that this information is based on my own experience at Orlando. It may be different at other offices. If you have already applied for AP through the regular channels but have not yet received it, I would imagine that you would bring evidence of your application and receipt showing payment so that you do not pay twice. Maybe someone with experience on that can comment.

Hope this is helpful.

What constitutes an emergency ?? My wife's best friend is getting married on July 21 ... which is only about 2 months away ... I think it is too late to file the form the regular way ... we are thinking of requesting an InfoPass appointment, but will this excuse be acceptable ? What type of evidence should we bring in ? What a mess !! We should have filed one with the I-485 application ......... grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I understand... My husband has a court order requiring him to bring his two sons to Canada once a month for visitation with their mother, but they would not issue an emergency AP for that reason. "Dead or Dying" he was told. That was our office though, it does not mean your local office follows the same guidelines.

...But, last Thursday at an infopass appt he was told that his AP "expedite" request was approved and an email was sent from the local Milwaukee office to the National Benefits Center approving "expedited service". We will just have to wait see... we've done EVERYTHING they told us!

Good Luck!

No tips on expedite since it's a wedding, not a life-altering situation.

AP is roughly 71 days to approval - check timelines here:

Our Expedite request was/is not life/death either and it was approved. We received the I-512L Authorization for Parole of an Alien Into the U.S. today. Of course ours was because I am deploying and it is a Military matter... but certainly not a life/death emergency.

I suggest you over night the Expedite request with the AP I-131 form with a letter explaning the situation. However I caution using her "Best friend" as the reason as you are likely to get denied. If a family member is getting married that is different. Never hurts to try. Ken & Maria
