Hi all, I just found out my husband will be interviewed as Cr-1 and not K3. My question is: how does this work as far as getting a job here in the US? Does he need to file for a work permit? Does he just need to file for SS number? (of course assuming he is granted a visa!).

Just answered this one 2 hours ago so I will repeat.

Yes, since you are entering the USA on a CR-1 visa, the POE will stamp visa with I-551 stamp indicating Green-Card is being ordered, and the visa will act as a temp Green-Card.

Most employers will want a SSN in addition to the Green-Card, so you may have to wait until you have a SSN, You may have to visit a SSA office to apply to get a SSN, just show them the Visa with I-551 stamp, you may have to wait a few weeks before visiting SSA office for their records to be updated showing entry into the USA.

Green-Card is work authorization.

As a Permanent Resident you have most of the rights of a United States Citizen but there are some exceptions.

To live permanently in the United States provided you do not commit any actions that would make you removable (deportable) under the immigration law (section 237, Immigration and Nationality Act).

To be employed in the United States at any legal work of your qualification and choosing.

To be protected by all of the laws of the United States, your state of residence and local jurisdictions.

To vote in local elections where United States Citizenship is not required.

Exceptions

Some jobs will be limited to United States Citizens because of security concerns.

You may not vote in elections limited to United States Citizens.

Did your husband already apply for a Social Security card on DS-230 II? If so, his card will be mailed to him automagically, after he enters the US.

when he gets the CR1 visa and uses it when he comes to the United States, he will be a permanent resident...

All he basically has to do is wait for the green card which usally takes about a month or so....

You probably will have to go to your local SSA office after a few weeks of him being there to get his SSN...

He doesn't need any kind of EAD (work authorization)......

Then in about 2 years, he has to apply to remove his conditions... He can do this anytime between 90 days and the day his green card expires... When this is approved he will get a 10 year green card.....

Thanks guys, that's all I needed! Yep, I checked the SS box on the DS230II, I thought about not doing it, but then decided it could save some time! So I went ahead. This is how I thought it was going to be, but then I just had a moment where I wasn't sure! Working on your own kind of does that

Sometimes the SS box does not result in a number being generated, if and when you get the green-card, and if you don't have the SSN card, visit the SSA office and check on it.

I figured I would.. and probably when he gets here. I've noticed it's better to just KNOW what's going on than to "give them some time" and then find out you should have come 2 weeks ago...
