So I'm about to start my application for my Visa to the U.S, problem is I'm feeling overwhelmed and continue to find so much varied information I don't know what's right and what's wrong. After two years doing this long distance I would hate to screw something simple up and ruin this for my fiancé and I. Any advice or help would be immensely appreciated!!

First and foremost, always read the USCIS form instructions and follow those. You can use the VJ guides and example forms along with the form instructions to prepare what to send, and you can always ask questions here if you get stuck.

Okay I guess my first question is what to do for my police check. The consulate says I need to provide fingerprints, the AFP says I need them before hand when sending in paperwork but my local police station says i need to do it online and bring in a receipt number to do my fingerprints. Which one is correct?

Also do I need to start my DS-160 form before I hear from the US consulate in Sydney or will they contact me? My fiancé says his paperwork says they will contact me but it's been a while and I haven't heard anything.

Oh my god, I love you. I've had so many people put their two cents in and this is the first time it's made sense to me.

Although one thing is police said they need a receipt to do the fingerprints which I can't provide until I send the AFP form in.

It doesn't have to have fingerprints... this is copied and pasted directly from my Consulate instructions (and my interview is next month)


Go onto the AFP website and select OPTION 33 - the one for Immigration / full disclosure ... that's the right one :)






Australian police certificates: Original only


You must apply for an Australian Federal Police Certificate (AFP). Australian police certificates are valid for 12 months from date of issuance.


Your certificate can be based on a name check or fingerprint check.


If it’s based on a name check, it must contain all aliases previously and presently used. Failure to provide a name check certificate with all aliases may result in the consular officer refusing your application for a police certificate based on a fingerprint check.

Okay this is totally off topic of the paperwork but can anyone that has recently had their medical please explain what they do in regards to examining 'eternal genitalia'

I have this fear of the unknown and doctors thing and feel I will be better prepared for my medical if I know what I'm in for.

Has the visa package been sent or in the process of been sent from the US? I would not apply for a police check until then. It is only valid for 12 months and the process takes around 3-4 months and you dont want it expiring :) It was very easy to get for the K1. I just got a standard name check (though a disclosed is preferred) and I had no issues with my visa being granted!

Has anyone had their partner fill out the affidavit of support yet? If so, my fiancé and I are confused by question 11. I do intend or I do not intend. He seems to think if he ticks do not intend it means it's because I'm staying there with him in his house and he will pay for me until I get a job. I think he should be ticking I do intend to support her because that's what the purpose of the form is anyway. Can anyone tell me which one is right?
