hmmm... I'm just wondering cause they ran all the papers I asked them to just cause I showed them the paper where it said they should accept I-797..however I still don't know what the response from that will be... I wasn't allowed to do any tests either until I heard back from them... waiting on a letter... I'll let you know the outcome

I can't deny it was a little of a hassle because they first start looking at my expired (of course it's expired lol) I-94 and didn't understand so it was a lot of explaining how this visa worked and why my I-94 is expired. But the NOA1's showed I am in a legal, authorized stay which the DMV allows. You either are a US resident, lawful permanent resident or in authorized stay. They ran all the documents, verified everything. I took my tests and passed. She did say it would have been easier with the EAD card but oh well, it worked. I hope to hear some soon about my EAD, too. It's dreadful now lol.

Seems we had a similar experience, at least up until verification... she couldn't verify on the spot cause my name is too long to fit in the boxes they have.. lol had the same prob at SSO.

So they did not verify you? I told them 10 times to verify me through my alien number, that seems to work a lot of times as what I've read here on VJ. Keep me updated, Suss.

When she said I passed my knowledge test, first thing coming out of my nervous mouth was "F* Yes! Now I can drive to Taco Bell when I'm hungry!"

You can call them and tell them if they can run your alien number through the SAVE database. Every federal institution like the DMV and SSA office have to follow that procedure whatever you provide to confirm your legal stay.

They attempted to verified me, scanned all my papers to USCIS, but since I have THREE  (Sweden problems ;) ) first names it doesn't fit in the box in the database which means it takes longer to verify.  So I'm waiting on a letter from them to tell me if it went through or not. If yes then I can go take the exams.

And yes, they put in both passport and A-number but whatever number they put in has to be accompanied by a name... and that doesn't fit

That's interesting to know all of that about the driver's license. The only thing that's going smoothly through this whole process is the actual filing of the papers and getting his work and travel card in 88 days. Other than that the social security number and the driver's license have been a nightmare for us. First went to the DMV with the I-94 and they said that we needed paper to show that he could stay here legally other than that. I went to the Social Security office as well the same day before the DMV and they said it would take 6 weeks to get his card meanwhile 10 weeks later still no card. After getting is AP and EAD card we went back to the driver's license place I know they say we need the social security number in order for him to get a driver's license. So then back to the Social Security Office to find out where the card is. It was on hold because it was waiting for the AP in the EAD. Yet I see my friends getting both the driver's license and Social Security card without the AP and EAD. Doesn't seem like it's even across the board

If more than 14 days left on i-94 they are supposed to verify you for SSC. BUT if they have to send it off for verification that can take a while. Mine took 8 weeks. This is why here on VJ it is recommended to go apply for SSC as soon as you can..  If the i-94 is within the 14 days of expiration once they get your verification then they are locked out from the system and can't issued the card until you have again a legal unexpired immigration document.

Yes our dmv also require SSC and I got it before the i-94 14 day period.

It's just such a hassle. Most federal institutions like these don't know what is possible and what we can and what we can't. I was extremely lucky that all three ladies took their time to find out what the best way was, how to do it precisely and correctly etc. For a second I thought they'd send me away but after 20 minutes they took a photo, had to fill out papers, took a vision test, knowledge test etc etc.

One of the ladies... not the one that entered my application said "everyone thinks we're doing it wrong, but many times we can't verify right away when you are in your position or even right away when you have your EAD card" I explained that I don't assume they are doing anything at all wrong but that I need them to explain it to me cause the website is saying one thing and they are saying another and it's all new to me and how else am I supposed to know the correct way of doing it and what the steps are.

That lady then also said that "Before, ppl used to not adjust their status and they could come here and just get a license or an ID. The reason ppl adjust their status now is that they can't anymore" At that point she was really getting on my nerves but I kept calm lol. I was thinking "LISTEN LADY!! I'm adjusting status cause I wanna live and work here and be a part of this country!! I have done everything in the right order and to the very best of my ability!! I have done all my damn research and even STILL this is a problem! I'm stuck in limbo!" but I just said, "Maybe so" smiled and bit my tongue. Grrrrrr....

I was in the same boat last November when I tried to take the DL knowledge test. Brought my I-94 (which expired last Nov09) and NOAs with me and was told my DL application will not be processed until I receive my EAD/GC.

As soon as I received the combo card last month I tried to process my dl and things went smoothly from there..

Damn, that's so rude! I hope I could have been acting as calm as you did! Basically the lady told me too that most of the visa applicants think they're doing it wrong but verifying just takes a while. I can understand, knew this could be a total hassle. I thought for a second they wouldn't let me do it but she said even if the verification didn't go through, they would put it on hold.

Did they input your documents for attempting verification at that time, or just said come back?

Nope.. not at all. DMV lady just checked my I-94 and told me to come back once I have my EAD/GC.
