Hello to everyone,

I have a couple of questions about the health insurance for my mother who is immigrating to the US at the end of October and will have a green-card. I am a US citizen. My mother is 67 years old and she will live with me in the same apartment in Ohio.

I am planning to apply for health insurance for her through Health Insurance Marketplace that will open on November 1. I have a couple of questions:

1) Her household size - what she should enter here? I am not planning to claim her as my tax dependent, she will file her own taxes for 2016. So that means she should put "1" for her household size? The thing that confuses me is that she will be living with me in the same apartment. Does that mean she should put "2" for her household size? In this case, she will probably not qualify for health insurance discounts since they will add my income as well.

2) Concerning her 2016 income - she sold her apartment in her home country this year and got about $17,000 which she transferred to my US bank account (I will give it back to her once she is here). She paid all the taxes/fees for it in her home country. Also she got about $1,500 as retirement payments in her home country this year. In the healthcare information about the income:

https://www.healthcare.gov/income-and-household-information/income/

it states that "Excluded (untaxed) foreign income" should be included as income. But she paid taxes in her home country for the above income (so it is not "untaxed"), so that means she does not include that? Which means she will put $0 as her 2016 income?

Finally, if someone has better ideas for finding health insurance for her here in Ohio, I will really appreciate if you share them here.

Thank you in advance.

Medicaid would be the obvious option assuming your state allows it, otherwise prepare to bend over.

She your mother is just coming here your only option is to apply through the market place and get ready to pay a good amount for her to get coverage. She puts down 2as her household size cuz if she puts 1 and when they look at her application they will ask her who petitioned for her. But she claims zero income. Good luck take your time picking the best plan that fits your mother's needs
