Hi I need some help. Anybody here that just filed or had their citizenship done recently? I came here with k1 visa and couple years later (last year) my daughter came from the Philippines. I am now eligible to apply for a citizenship (naturalization) but I am a bit confused and need some help to enlighten me. So my daughter is now 9 y/o and as far I am concerned she will derive citizenship through me. But then recently had a friend told me that aside from filing n-400, I will also need to file n-600 and that is additional $600. Do I really need to file n-600 as well? Please help.

Thank you!

No, you don't have to file for the Certificate. Once you become a USC, you can go ahead and apply for a US passport for her which will evidence her US citizenship.

Bad advice for the N-600 Certificate of Citizenship

Certificates of Citizenship and Naturalization both serve as proof of U.S. citizenship, but the eligibility requirements differ. A Certificate of Citizenship is available to people who were born abroad and automatically acquired or derived U.S. citizenship through birth to or adoption by a U.S. citizen parent or parents (whether U.S. citizens by birth or naturalization), while a Certificate of Naturalization is given to a lawful permanent resident after he or she fulfills the requirements established by Congress in the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).

Follow the N-400 instructions; list all your children on the form, include evidence they are your children - birth certificates, etc.

Note: Child obtains U.S. citizen - and not need to apply for naturalization if your biological or adoptive parent(s) became a U.S. citizen before you reached the age of 18. For more information, visit our Citizenship Through Parents page.

Hi guys, that's what I thought. I hate to be spending more money if it's not necessary. My question is, if my daughter renew a blue passport will she be required for some sort of documentation such as certificate of naturalization? Or when she apply for drivers licence later will she need a certificate of naturalization? I know for sure DMV is kinda hard to deal with. Please share your thoughts and experience folks.

She won't need it during renewal since she'll need to give in her expired passport which was given to her on the basis that she was a USC. If she applies for a DL, she can include a US passport as evidence of her citizenship status.

In any case, if it ever turns out that she needs the certificate, then she's free to apply for one at any time.

All she will need is her old passport to renew and get a new BLUE passport. The passport IS evidence of U.S. citizenship. Do make sure to go to SSA to update their database after citizenship.

How are you two doing? Glad to see everything is done
