i was just adding benefits for my spouse and they sent me an email back stating i need SS # for them. i didnt get that done when i had her I 94 and during this time period. I also can't get it until she gets her Aos approved or at least until her work approval is processed. This can take months. Does this sound correct to you?? Am i stuck now?

i have good health benefits too. i don't want to have to buy travelers insurance again. help...

It depends on the requirements/instructions of your, or your employer, health insurance carrier, and will likely vary from carrier to carrier. Try to work with your company's HR dept, sometimes they can help.

If you follow the VJ Flowchart, you can get the SSA ball rolling a little earlier, if not then you will likely have to wait until your spouse receives their EAD or GC.

Having an SSN is not a requirement that should bar a person from health insurance according to the law. However, this does not stop unknowledgeable or confused insurance or HR employees from asking for it. I would say, it would be helpful to have one, but there are certainly other ways to get around it if you can find a supervisor that will help you. Either way you will need to discuss the matter with someone.

I was able to just use a generic 123-45-6789 SSN for my husband once we got married but before he had his SSN. Once we got the SSN then I updated it with the insurance company. It was never an issue. Your HR department should know what to do as this does happen from time to time.

The insurance provider for my company sent a letter wanting an explanation as to why a SSN# was not provided. We listed that she has traveled here to marry and is currently going through the immigration process as to the reason for no SSN#.

This satisfied the insurance company and she was added to my coverage.

If your HR Dept, does not have something similar, reach out to the insurance company.

Good Luck!

When I applied for health insurance for my wife, there was some confusion with HR. They thought that she was considered an LPR. They didn't realize she didn't have her green card yet. Because she didn't have a green card, she was considered to be a Foreign National. Once they knew that, there wasn't any problem getting her added without the SSN number.
