You give up the greencard right after the oath

Processing times are back to normal (after the glitch). I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry... Houston is incredibly slow, I'm so frustrated.

That's right. You are still an LPR right up until you take the oath, so they take it then. If you are in the situation where your field office does same day oaths though, you will need to postpone it. That is allowed. You can do it when you get back. You do need to let them know when you do get to take the oath, how long you were away.

You do need to let them know when you do get to take the oath, how long you were away.

I'm also from Houston, filed in October, been "in line" since December 5th, is it really taking 10 months to approval for folks here in Houston?

Some places offer a same day oath, and others say they will send you a letter.  I'd ask at interview. 

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

USCIS have always maintained that those dates reflect the oldest cases they have and are working on.  It' s hard to know what the actual story is.
