Didn't know where to ask this but I will ask here. So as most of you know a few of us from my job went over to help open up an expansion of our business in Glasgow Scotland. One of my coworkers is staying for a year. He got a passport for his boyfriend and paid for a ticket for him to come visit. Well... the boyfriend got stopped in Dublin customs and sent home for lack of job back home or evidence of relationship. This is crazy too me.. I understand the US doing it but I thought we were allowed to visit other countries.

My friend is so upset and doesn't know what to do. I do not understand why he had him go through Dublin and not London Heathrow. When I went there none of us had any problems going into England at customs. Why would they turn him back for just wanting to visit???

The UK has the same concerns as the USA about someone coming into the country and not leaving.

When we were dating my husband was often asked the purpose of his visit and asked about his return ticket and plans.

Anyone traveling to the UK to visit at romantic partner should consider taking the same evidence of return as when other nationalities visit the US.

For example - a return ticket, evidence of a job/life to return to, a reasonable visit time, fund to cover the visit. etc etc.

But Dublin isn't the UK.

OP, where was he travelling from and to? Was it Dublin pre-clearance that stopped him? Or was he trying to enter Ireland?

American citizens should never feel that their passport gives them a carte blanche for entry into other countries. Being sent back home is typical if they do not believe the individual has proper ties to return. The individual should always bring as much proof as they can. Dublin is not part of the UK it is in the ROI. However, they were traveling onward to Scotland which is in the UK correct? If it is anything similar to the UK's procedure.. if sent back to the states it will depend on many things, like the paperwork they were given. They can usually attempt to return and are not barred from trying again, provided they can offer proof. But it is not something I would personally attempt, at least after waiting a long while. Bad luck but it certainly does happen.

I'm gonna go ahead an place more emphasis on this part of yuna's reply. My job has a travel department dedicated to making sure our employees have proper documents to travel for business and I have still heard of coworkers being detained or denied entry. Doesn't happen often. But it does happen.

Why not ask the person who would know, the boyfriend.

You mean the boyfriend is a USC being denied entry to Dublin?

Yes

How long did the boyfriend say he would stay? When was his return ticket for?

He would stay a couple of months and then return to the US

But Dublin isn't the UK.

OP, where was he travelling from and to? Was it Dublin pre-clearance that stopped him? Or was he trying to enter Ireland?

Traveling from Chicago to Dublin then onto Scotland. I know they have a lawyer trying to work out the details. My coworker has gone silent on me now as I try to inquire. He is probably depressed. I feel so bad for him

Not sure if he took anything with him. Hes young no job and depends on my coworker for financial support. Not working currently in the US.

You mean the boyfriend is a USC being denied entry to Dublin?

Yes exactly. My Co-worker is a USC but has a Visa to work for a year in Scotland. I didn't need a Visa just went there to help the business and stayed 89 days. No problem. Even flew to Dublin while I was in the UK.They questioned me but let me through/

I watch a lot of the fly-on-the-wall TV shows about various countries immigration controls and it amuses me whenever they show predominantly US tourists getting very indignant when they have any trouble getting in to other countries.

They always talk about how stupid it is that they're being questioned and that they would think that the foreign immigration is cruel for even considering not letting them in.

I can't help thinking that these people have absolutely no idea how strict their own country is when it comes to tourists.

Of course he was denied entry. Their customs and border patrol felt like he was going to stay. He has no reason to return.
