Hi everyone. Hoping someone could clarify a few things?

* Does form 1040 (tax return) need to be signed?

* The joint sponsor entered his adjusted gross income instead of total income in section 19, should I get him to change it? I only ask because he was already annoyed that he had to provide this information in the first place. He is above the poverty line regardless if he uses adjusted or total.

* If I just print the page (from a blank I-864 form) with the income information reentered will that stuff up the bar code at the bottom of the page?

Thanks in advance for any input!

The tax return that they want is a copy of what was actually sent to the IRS (which would have been signed by the taxpayer who is filing their taxes) when the taxes for the previous years were filed, not a new filled-in tax form.

You can get transcripts (which I believe is preferred) online that will be mailed to you, that you can then send in with your other materials.

Don't know how to answer your other question about the bar code.

Thanks for the reply. It was filed electronically without a signature. So is he supposed to sign it and date it the original date that he submitted it online?

He has already told me that he does not want to get the transcripts. I know he's being very difficult about the whole process but as he is my soon to be father in law and I am staying under their roof I don't want to do anything to sour our relationship.

Just tell him it's lots easier to just go online and order the transcripts (it is, really, so much easier than copying paper). They'll get mailed to him in a couple of days. You can help him do this. :)

I wish it were that easy >< When it comes to the government and his tax information, all logic gets thrown out the window...

So I'm just going to have to stick with the 1040 forms.

Would someone be able to comment on whether I need him to sign the 1040 forms? I've seen a mixture of responses about this from old posts but it would be great to hear from someone who had successfully filed AOS with either a signed or unsigned 1040 form (and w2, 1099 etc).

You can just make a copy of his complete return, with all forms, schedules, W-2s and/or 1099s, and have him sign the 1040. He date it from when it was filed, or when he signs. Not sure it matters.

If they filed a 1040EZ, then they enter the last years of AGI. If they did not use the 1040EZ, then they enter the Total Income, which is line 22 of a 1040 and line 15 of a 1040a. If you re-enter the correct info, then print, the barcode should change as the barcode will have the info you entered embedded in it.

If you are completing this affidavit on a computer, USCIS will capture the data you enter using 2D barcode technology.
This capture will ensure that the data you provide is accurately entered into USCIS systems. As you complete each data
field, the 2D barcode line at the bottom of each page will shift as data is captured. Upon receipt of your affidavit, USCIS
will use decoding equipment to extract the data from the affidavit.
