Rob I am in Grand Rapids MI not Athens :)

I mighy be whining a bit but I am a little overwhelmed. You must also understand that my US husband was unemployed for 3+ years in Greece and we barely scrapped by with what I made. We had no money aside to move if the in laws hadn't helped.

So there simply was NOT a choice to be made. It was either their way or the highway. We could not have done it without them.

As for why I am asking, well I do not know how the system works here. I don't know where to look. I have put in 87 applications that I meet the criteria or overqualify for and I didn't get a single interview ... yet.

I am also looking into get certified in a couple areas I qualify for in hopes of landind a better job.

All the while working 40 hrs a week and taking care of 3 kids plus doing ALL the housework/errands/shopping and all those things that make a family tick...aaaand I do not know a soul here to talk to :)

So no I am anything but idle trust me. I just have time ot energy to go blindly looking so any info here helps me greatly.

I apologize if I sounded whinny. Unfortunately moving is not an option. My son is in a specialty school for his special needs and I will not move them again. I have to make something work locally.

Why is Grand Rapids remote in your opinion?

Grand Rapids? MUCH BETTER! I, for one, had looked up Athens, MI and saw it was sooo small. Finding work will be hard there. I think Grand Rapids will be much better than Athens for work!

I don't think you are whining. I know your husband is ill, and has been out of the US for 15 years or so, and out of work for around that long too. So while he should be helping you get acclimated and fix your resume and everything, he is probably almost as clueless as you and needs to be "retrained" for 2016. I think your inlaws should be helping you more, but you can't force them. So that sucks.

And without specifics, people here can only help so much (not that you would want to put all your personal details on a public forum).

You asked about temp agencies. They are hired by employers to find people to fill jobs. You give them your resume (they usually help you fix it too) and they fill the positions for the employers. It works for the employer because they usually can fill a job fast. It works for you because you get jobs fast. Sometimes (fairly often in my experience) the jobs turn into permanent jobs if they like you. No cost to you.

Something like being admin assistant at a small office can eventually turn into you being office manager. That requires no degree, just experience.

I see a lot more jobs in Grand Rapids. Even a janitor job at a middle school for $20/hour.

If I had to guess, I think you probably need to fix your resume and you might need to apply in-person if you can. So they can see you.

I think you have great people skills. You get so many people to reply to your posts. You need to get someone to want to give you a job :)

AOS for my husband

In addition to what Harpa just beautifully wrote, you don't seem to have any language barrier; which is an asset.

Seriously, send Harpa or me your resume. We'll help you out and I'm willing to bet, you will get a lot more calls than you have so far. It's just a matter of marketing you better.

Why is Grand Rapids remote in your opinion?

Your profile shows Athens , MI. Grand Rapids is better but its the conservative side of MI . There arent many foreigners working there. Try Local colleges and credit Unions.

She's not some random foreigner but the wife of a native Michiganer who has finally come back to this great state to raise their children! (That's the story she should tell ;)).
