I think I am fired after only 4 days!!

Hey VJers,

So I got a job at a super market chain stocking shelves... they changed my schedule/hours however they wanted without telling me to the point I can't work. I worked 4 days and on Friday my supervisor told me that if I miss 2 days of work, I am fired.

I left work to pick up my toddler from daycare and she was acting funny. Took her to urgent care and she had a broken arm!!!

Daycare then said "oh she fell off a ladder in the playground ".

I was supposed to work this weekend and tomorrow, I called and explained that my baby broke her arm and I must stay with her (we have no help and my husband works 2nd shift and we have no money for extra help). Tomorrow I must take her to a specialist as urgent care were not able to do anything other than put a cast on. I will miss work tomorrow too which means according to their policy I will be fired :(

I feel like I am drowning the more I find ouy about how jobs work here in the USA.

There are no 9-5 weekday jobs for us immigrants?

Nobody seems to care about my degrees. I have gotten a single interview. Only thing I am "good" for is stocking.

My husband and daughter are ok as Americans. They have righys and Healthcare and I am happy for that.

But I feel worthless here :(

Please give me a pick me up.

I will go beg tomorrow for my job and see if I can get them to change my hours as I can only work when the kids are at school.

Thanks for listening!!

Oh I would LOVE being a secretary!!!

I know I know.. I am trying to keep my chin up. My mother in law keeps mentioning how poor we are and how we can't afford this or that and that I should leave the baby to them so I can go work (note: they are leaving for the winter in a week) and that now she is in a cast she doesn't really need to see anyone else and that she never missed a day of work and how she made her kids go to school hurt or sick regardless...

She made me feel like ####### (sorry).

I keep putting applications in but no takers yet.

Hope my baby is given the ok tomorriw as they suspect a second fracture :(

Try temp agencies as well. Anywhere retail will be sucking the life out of you with Halloween, thanksgiving and holidays coming up. Stores are crazier even now. You will find something, keep trying and stay strong

Try getting something at a legitimate call center, or Mall store

making sure you get & define hrs you work. so you'll have tiome

for your baby, you can try front desk at the hotel too. Sometimes

you have to take a day to job hunt just applying onlime alone

goes slow. I would not let you go back to that job...best wishes

How far can you drive out? When I moved here I didn't know how to drive and I was majorly sucking at getting interviews and when I did get them I couldn't get hired.

I had an interview for a part time receptionist job at a community college. Back home I was a receptionist at an adult learning centre so I had the experience, plus the interview seemed very much like "you have the job, this is just a formality". What happened? A few days later I got a generic email from HR telling me thanks but no thanks. Really hit my self esteem!

In the end I got my husband to teach me to drive his car and got my license after two months. As soon as I could travel out of my immediate surroundings, I found tons more jobs. I applied for every data entry position I could find. Just over a month later, I got a job that I'm still at over a year later and they've moved me to the IT department. I'm gonna be trained to be a junior developer which is actually what I studied back home.

So yes, do go for the little data entry jobs and whatnot. They will usually be Mon-Fri and you can showcase your skills and education. Work your way up, start from scratch. It's better than $0 every two weeks or settling for a supermarket that won't give you hours you can physically do.

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

September 26th 2016: I-751 package sent to CSC

October 30th 2017: Infopass appointment to get I-551 stamp
February 26th 2018: I-751 case number (aka the NOA1 receipt number) becomes trackable
March 14th 2018: Submitted service request due to being outside of processing time.

March 15th 2018: ROC approved. 535 days (1 year, 5 months and 17 days)

March 29th 2018: Card being produced

April 4th 2018: Card mailed out

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

August 15th 2018: Card in hand with correct date. :joy:

October 31st 2018: Potomac sends out a notice stating they have closed out my I-90 per my request. Yay for no duplicate card drama.

My daughter broke her elbow last year, it sucked! There are jobs available for immigrants, you just have to keep looking and maybe go where there are jobs.

I would suspect that they wouldn't fire you for this, seems like it would be a bit of a PR issue if they did.

3/2/18  E-filed N-400 under 5 year rule

3/26/18 Biometrics

7/2019-12/2019 (Yes, 16- 21 months) Estimated time to interview MSP office.

Hello OP,

You will get a good job. You just have to look for it. 11 years ago, I was an immigrant from the Philippines, my first job was at a photography company, a year after, this company moved me to their San Francisco main office, moved up as a senior employee in the department, but I had to quit to move to another city. At the new city, I worked at the newspaper as an account executive for a year and quit but now I work for the federal government that I enjoy.

You are not limited to what you can do when it terms to job. Chin up. You'll be ok. You'll find a great job you'll love.
