Hey guys! I started filling in my DS-260, and right at the beginning my wife's names don't fit...

Her maiden name is huge, and when we got married she dropped 3 surnames, and kept 2 previous ones and added mine. So she went from having 5 surnames to 3. Her current name fits fine, but I've read that when you fill out previous names used it has to be the full name, not just the specific surnames that have been dropped.

(the following examples are not her real name of course, just similar representations of the changes:)

Name at birth:

Ex.: Jane Santorini Montgomery Burns O'Malley Anderson

Also for a while she adopted her ex-husband's surname:

Ex: Jane Santorini Montgomery Burns O'Malley Anderson Vega

Currently her name "is":

Ex: Jane Santorini Anderson Pancake

Crazy how many name's people will end up with here in brazil... What should I do regarding the lack of space?

My advice is to attach a separate sheet of paper referencing the form and the question number such as Attachment to form DS-260, question # xx (former names) exactly how the question is worded. Then on that page list our her full former names. This frequently happens with long names or addresses that do not fit.

I just realized that you may be filling out his form online. In that case, I am not sure exactly the best suggestion. Perhaps write as much as possible and then take the separate sheet with you to the interview? Good luck!
