Noted, and I never said you were a racist. In our southern states, especially so.Cal, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, the vast majority of the Migrant workers are illegal Mexicans not here on a work visa. As far as IT goes, companies have been outsourcing to India and Philippines for more than 15 years, including myself when I worked at Earthlink's call center in Pasadena for $15.85hr our entire team of 1500+ techs were terminated in 2003 and replaced by a call center in Malaysia by employees being paid roughly $2.65hr with 1/4 the staff. Needless to say, Earthlink went bankrupt and shutdown less than 2 years later, but this trend of call center outsourcing has continued to thrive to the point there are not many call centers in the US anymore, and the few that do exist are generally the Tier 2 and above higher skilled techs which the low skilled outsourced call centers escalate their calls to when they cant resolve an issue by reading their scripts. As an IT contractor for the past 20 years, working at many many companies on-site, I have yet to come across an H1B, however, I am sick of being replaced by college puke know-it-all's fresh out of school with absolutely no on the job experience, and being told "your contract is being terminated and oh by the way you need to train the new kid before you leave because nobody here at our company knows how to do your job". Uhh isn't that what they should have been learning in school, shouldn't they have thought about that before deciding to replace me to save a couple $$ per hour? lol

Good for you for being a contractor for that long. I did that for 3 years and I finally got out of being a contractor and I am steady employee now doing telecommunications. It means less pay for me but better stability. I have seen that type of "Ageism" happen in the IT field and it is frustrating I bet. I have come across a few H1b's in my time but not many, but I have talked with people that are worried about their job going to India.

Since it's an income/economic issue for both illegal immigrants and blue collar workers as your sources have pointed out, what solution do you propose or support?

Are you asking me how to fix one of the major flaws in both our economy also in many other countries around the globe? Well alright, that's sort of a tall order for a Wednesday evening, but I will do what I can to at least address it.

As I mentioned the cause of the decline in blue collar wages (as well as a decline in the availability for some of these jobs) is multi-faceted. One of the causes being automation, where the rise of mechanical/robotic/digital production has been all but inevitable. Having machines on your production lines by most accounts is cheaper, more efficient, and leaves you less open to workplace safety issues. While the jobs created to build these machines as well as upkeep them has stop the hemorrhaging of jobs slightly, there is still an overall net loss in positions being held by humans. Is there a way to get around this? Not unless corporations, consumers, and workers all throw support behind returning to a more traditional production system. But that's pretty unlikely, and there have been positive outcomes that the move to automatic production has lead to.

Along the lines of production and labor cost cuts, I think that what will always be the driving issue is that companies profit when they make things cheaply as possible. In the black in white context of what makes money and what doesn't, shipping jobs overseas in order to reduce labor costs is a "smart" business move. So is hiring people who will work for less within the United States. Until we can somehow come to a point where doing so isn't rewarded by profit gains, there really isn't much incentive for any business, especially those large enough to be much more immune to public scrutiny, to keep jobs in the U.S. There have been politicians who have discussed penalizing business who do outsource jobs and production, or rewarding those who bring jobs back, but unfortunately any policy that interferes with the invisible hand of the market aren't very popular in the current political climate. I do think they are something to think about in moderation though.

I do admit I wasn't exactly fair in making it seem like immigration didn't impact wages at all and would more accurately correct my stance to say that the effect that immigrants have on the national economy as a whole is negligible compared to the large host of other factors. Also I would point out that many of those factors, including the employment of undocumented laborers in order to cut labor costs, stem from systematic issues within capitalism that are exploited to the benefit of the industry, and not the immigrants themselves.

Ok, let me give you an example of how Illegals take up benefits and resources from the government from first hand experience. The Illegal person comes here and has children either already or when they get here they have children. The children either Legal or Illegal go to school, the children receive benefits from the school such as free lunch. The Illegal students also take up class room space in a school. The legal children that have illegal parents are given benefits such as snap, housing. The state of California does give this to people that are Illegals, this state is a sanctuary state.

The problem going on with IT right now is that companies are laying off the American workers and bringing in H1b's to do the work of that American. It has been happening for a couple years now and only came to a head a couple months back when Disney did it, and that's when people stood up to take notice.

I am honored that you think what I do is somehow important enough to have a direct hand in the backlash against refugees in Europe, I have definitely never thought about it that way! I worked quite a few years doing application development and support in order to pay my way through undergrad. O considered a career in it, but it all is just a little too impersonal for me.

Unfortunately there are some issues with your school example. Since public schools are funded primarily at the state level through a combination of sales taxes and income taxes, as well as at the local level by property taxes, as long as immigrants are working, buying anything, or living anywhere other than the street they are directly contributing to their education. Yes, you heard that right folks, UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRANTS PAY TAXES. Unavoidably so in the case of sales tax (it's added onto the price of an object. Undocumented Immigrants don't have a special card that exempts them form this) and property taxes. Many pay taxes on their income as well, and funny enough, one of the biggest limiting factor for how much the government can earn in taxes from undocumented immigrants is the low wages they are paid. As for the free lunch programs you specifically mentioned, I would first argue this is a negligible percentage of any budget, but regardless of that... Such programs are usually income based, and therefore an issue of poverty again, not just immigrants. I'm also not aware of any definitive studies that show how many immigrants are using free lunch programs at the schools they attend versus low-income USCs.

Thanks, Morgan. Maybe I'm wrong but, it seems like the kind of checks and balances/regulation on businesses is in place in some European countries (EU incentives/state investment in local businesses, etc.). So, you'd like the US to become more like the EU economically? I was wondering what kind of solutions you learned about in your studies, you could just reference names/books/sources....no need to spell it out by yourself.

Small world, saw a guy doing a re roof this afternoon, started talking, he was doing his last re roof, going to keep the business but just do small jobs, repairs.

Just can not compete with the contractors using illegals and does not want to go that route.

Talking to another guy up here hunting, retired now, bit still does a few things. He is from SE Colorado and he can get labour all day for $8 an hour, he pays $10. $12 would be top wack.

Obviously there has to be an adjustment, massive disparity in labour costs, there has to be a leveling down.
