POE + NEXUS?

Hi all,

So my POE is going to be the Calgary International Airport, where customs is before security. Now it's probably obvious that I'll need to show them the K-1 visa and NOT be in the NEXUS line for this portion as they need to activate it, however once I'm past that point, can I use NEXUS for the TSA/security portion afterwards, or should I still join the regular line and just pretend I don't have a NEXUS?

Customs is before security?? that is so weird!

I have no idea. I used the NEXUS lane when I crossed, although I read after the fact that you're not supposed to. At YVR customs they pull you into secondary to review your paper and I imagine it's similar at YYC. In any case, your trusted traveller status doesn't change when your residency does (but you do have to officially inform them of your change in residency and when you change your relevant IDs to US ones, don't forget). So I would just use it unless someone at the airport says otherwise so you can skip the lines. You'll have to go for processing no matter which way you go!

TSA/Security has nothing to do with immigration so yes, you can use the Nexus line after immigration.

Yep, you walk through customs first and then security, so by the time you're at security, as far as the US is concerned you're already in/admitted to the country despite still physically located in Calgary. After security, your flight becomes a US-domestic flight and you'll land at the domestic terminals anywhere in the US instead of international.

That would be great if I can use NEXUS to skip past the long line that's typically there for POE as well, but if it's something that's not allowed, I won't do it.

Great! Sorry I didn't see your response before I replied last time. This will be good because at least at YYC they won't even let you see customs more than 2 hours before your flight, and the welcome letter states to allow up to 1 hour for visa activation regardless of POE, so I'd really hate to miss my flight due to an incredibly long TSA/security line afterwards, leaving me only 1 hour to get through and board.

One time I missed a flight (before I got NEXUS) because I showed up to check in 1 hour before my flight left, and they wouldn't even admit me because "no point, you're going to miss your flight anyways", so I had to pay a $75 late fee and take the next flight 7 hours later, bah.

It's a blessing and a curse for us Canadians to have the POEs in our own airports rather than after we land like it would be for most other countries.

That is really weird that it is customs and then security. Normally they want customs after for security reasons. Both airports I have traveled from to the US (Montreal and Toronto) it is security and then customs.

I have not been back to Canada yet since I moved here in February. I still use my TSA Pre-check that I get in the US but I know for Nexus I need to update my permanent address and residency at the enrollment center...but have not been to one yet.

When I just did mine last month, they told me I could have faxed my info to them? maybe try calling to see if they give you that option.

Calgary has customs before security. It's so they can use TSA as security instead of CATSA.

According to the CBP in Calgary you can update your NEXUS at any CBP office, but most are too lazy and tell you to go to an enrollment center.
