Hi everyone

I have recently arrived in MI and have received my SS Number back in the mail. My next mission is to obtain a learners permit and begin my driving lessons. I have never had a DL anywhere in the world. Is it possible for me to obtain a learners permit at the moment?

Thank You

Yes. If you go to a driving school they can help you get the learner's permit. Good luck! :)

Just do it yourself - I did. Did you do your provisional back in Scotland? I'm also from Scotland - woo! It's easy you'll be fine.

I have my provisional card from Scotland yes but I never done any lessons? How come?

In Michigan, you can get a Temporary Instruction Permit at a Secretary of State (which requires a short knowledge test) and practice with a licensed driver over 21 since you're over 18. After thirty days, you'd be allowed to take an on the road skills test but it really is not too difficult and after that you can get your license! Michigan has a Graduated License System with driver's education classes for unlicensed drivers under 18 but you would not be required to take any or do it that way. Welcome to Michigan!!! :dancing::dance:

Hi I live very close to Farmington hills, You will need your SS and whatever visa o green card you need, the exam is very easy , just read the manual a few times, if you have never driven in your life take driving classes, they are normally very affordable. Make sure you get your license before we get snow, it gets bad here and our roads are terrible.

The written knowledge test.. What type of things does it involve? I have never driven before and am a little curious :)

When I took it, the test was fifty questions and you needed forty correct answers to pass. It'll just test if you know road signs, basic information about intersections, who goes first when two people are at a four way stop, speed limits, when it's legal to pass, etc. There are several free practice tests online that are extremely accurate and similar to what you'll have to do, so it's actually a lot easier than it seems. :D

Before I took the test, these websites were great for preparing me:

Practice tests for the written knowledge exam:

http://driving-tests.org/michigan/ (The questions are very similar to the ones I saw when I took the test last year.)

"What Every Driver Should Know"

(I would DEFINITELY read through it. It has all the information necessary to pass both your written and skills tests and tips for practicing. I would not have passed if it wasn't for this.)

Good luck!!! :dancing:

Thanks man! Yes I was hoping to learn before the bad weather comes! The summer seems to be hanging on at the moment :P. So is this written test I do when i apply for my Temporary Instruction Permit the only written test I will do? Im just confused as to what I have to study. I was under the impression I need to have a learners permit in order to go to these driving schools and learn all I need to know about driving? Thats how it works in the UK.. you get your provisional learners permit then that allows you to take driving lessons on the road and at the same time you study for your theory test.

THANK YOU! Can I ask another question.... I am beginning to read that some people are having trouble driving whilst filling for there AOS. I have not read too in depth yet but I know that the AOS can take up to a year. We marry in November then I will be applying for my AOS, surely I will be aloud to drive during that time?

it doesnt work that way, read the manual take a few tests at home then you can get an appointment at the Secretary of state, you can even schedule one online, the test is on a computer, As long as you understand english and have common sense you will pass it then they will give you a few weeks to practice on the road and then take the the road test once you pass it they will take your picture and and within 10 days you will get your drivers license in the mail. Whats your actually status in the US at the moment ?

I'm not entirely sure since we're just beginning the K-1 process and Germany and Michigan have an agreement which means my fiance is able to drive legally here with his German license, but I found these links that may help. It seems that with at least one individual, they were able to get their license renewed after they received their Work Permit three months in after filing AOS, which proved that they had legal presence in the US. It also seems that you can get your license now and have it valid until your I-94 expires. Personally, I would call your local DMV and ask or ask when you take your written knowledge exam because it may vary and you just might get lucky.

UPDATE. Took the test today and passed no problem. Quite easy. My permit will expire when my 90 days are up though. I have 60 days left to pass my skills test and get my full license. Then it will expire and I can go back to the SOS when i get my EAD Card i believe and get it back. Thanks for the help everyone!!! :)
