We didn't have the same issue with my wife's first name, but we did investigate changing her Russian passport when she chose to take my family name. Based on what we found out, it is an arduous task involving a legal name change document, and not all US marriage certificates suffice unless they have a specific section that shows the name change. Ours did not, so we would have had to go to court to change it legally even though the US accepted our marriage certificate when we filed the AOS. After that, she would need to change her Russian domestic passport which I heard could take several months and can only be done in Russia, then finally another month or so for her international passport. We resigned ourselves to keeping everything as is, purchasing her airline tickets in her passport name, and when she goes through naturalization, get her US passport in her married name. We plan to keep the Russian passport in her maiden name for travel to Russia, but everywhere else we will use her US passport.

you can write the other name in g-325A form in other names, you should use her passport name as her name. and write an explanation about her name in her other documents. They use her passport to take the Social Security Number. At the end of this process you can later decide if she want to change her name.

Hi, I'm currently trying to fill out a I-129F and had a question for y'all.

My fiance has a Belorussian Passport but has lived in Moscow for the last 16 years. Her name is Kristina but when I look at how Belarus translates it into English in her passport, it is written: "Krystsina"

The same with her parents Oleg = "Aleh" and Svetlana = "Sviatlana"

1) My question to you is how do I go about filling out these forms? She wants to use Kristina because the Belorussian transliterations are awful, but I am afraid if I put Kristina and the officer sees "Krystsina" there could be problems and possible rejection for mismatching names. Would I put Kristina as the name and her passport name as Other names used?

2) Additionally if there is no way to go forward with Kristina on the I-129f when would I be able to change her name to the proper spelling. I don't want to saddle her with an idiotic translation on every document she needs to drive/work/take credit. Would I have another chance at AOS?

And yes her b1/b2 also lists name as Krystsina, so I might be stuck with that until a wedding and that name change process.

Thank you for any help you can provide, I appreciate it greatly!

Neill

under "Other name used" you can write only any other LEGAL names you have used. It means you must have a proof of that - Birth Certificate, Name change certificate, Court Decision, Marriage License/Divorce Paperwork (as a proof of last name change) and etc.. You can not just write a name you want without providing supporting documents.

Definitely put her name as shown on her passport. She will have a chance to change it to whatever she wants when/if she applies for naturalization.
