Dear community,

I'm a PhD and in the process of looking for my next job after graduation. I worked in my university lab until the end of August via my FI-OPT which became active in March this year.

My husband is an American citizen. Early this year he went to being a full time student from a practicing architect who had worked full time for nearly 15 years prior to then. Since we both do not currently have incomes, which of the below two is the preferable option?

(A) Him to be my sole sponsor and for us to show our savings and the tax returns of the last few years?

(B) Ask a relative who is a citizen or has PR to be my joint sponsor

While (B) feels like the safer and therefore obvious option I am not sure how much financial evidence the joint sponsor should provide. Any thoughts and ideas on this are very appreciated.

(A) feels like a chicken and egg situation because I need a green card to get a job to support my family, but without a job we will be dependent on past earnings and savings to prove our worthiness for my green card, which may make getting it challenging.

Many thanks,

Genepoo

Thanks for moving this to the correct forum, Queen Penguin, and for your reply EM_Vandaveer

I'm considering asking my sibling, a permanent resident, to be my joint sponsor. I do not currently have medical insurance as I just ended a job last month that gave me insurance and am looking for my next job. I will likely get a job very soon. Hypothetically however, if I am uninsured and require medical treatment, does a joint sponsor become liable for my medical expenses?

It depends on where you live, how you pay for that medical treatment, and why you are getting it. For example, in most states, pregnant women can get free treatment. If you get sick, you can often self-pay to see a doctor, or make arrangements to pay small amounts each month, that way, no body else would be asked to pay (tax payer or your sibling).
