I hear you, sounds like you have a point. You don't want something to go missing being transferred between offices, and your process to be delayed....

 

When is your NOA? 

 

If you travel a lot, then why not get the I551 stamp? That should extend your status by 1 year, which should be enough time to file N400, and the applications to be consolidated. Then you don't need to worry. Good luck to you!!

 

(I say "should" because I've heard some people only getting 6 month extensions, but even that should be enough time to file N400)

Thanks for the response! NOA is 19-Sep-16. 

I might reconsider too. I had a lawyer who I spoke to about this ages ago who said you couldn't apply until ROC was approved. But I know that is not true as people on her have successfully done it.

You are not required to get the stamp. But if there is the chance you might need to travel overseas (unforeseen emergencies do arise), or you live in a state where your driver's license/state ID, if you have one, expires when your letter does, then it's probably a good idea to get it if at all possible. Hope this helps!

Besides,  it's necessary to have some form of current status, that unexpired.
