We've got an InfoPass appointment for next week to request a stamp in my husband's passport because he'll be traveling when his GC extension expires, so I'll report back how that goes. We're planning on bringing the expired green card, his UK passport, and GC extension letter with us to the appointment. Maybe an email or something from family requesting his presence because of the ill family member although not sure that's really necessary.

We filed the N-400 on Aug 8th even though I-751 is still processing at CSC. Personally, we opted to do that because we wanted to get in the queue for the naturalization processing as soon as we could since that is also a months-long process. It seems like a worthwhile trade off to have a slightly longer or more complicated interview if it shaves some time off his overall path to citizenship. Seeing as the citizenship supersedes the 10-GC and we were eligible to apply, that's what we went for. I've heard from others that occasionally it can cause delays in that you might not be approved on the date of the interview if they need to look back at the I-751 file or something but hopefully that's not always the case. That's just our preference though and it's totally understandable why someone would chose to wait for I-751 approval.

I think an additional year, but am not sure if it's the date from the stamp or date from old GC expiration. I'll ask when we're there.

They will write down the expiration date on the stamp, just like this someone posted on the web. as you may notice on top it says "evidencing permanent residency for one year", then there is also the "valid until" section in the bottom. In this particular case the two matches but not sure how they mark the stamp if they decide to give it for longer or shorter than one year.

I was considering it too. But I am VSC filer and I hope to get my GC in the next 2-3 months. So in order to not delay anything further or mess with an already messed up process, I'm holding off until I get the 10 yr GC.

You can't "mess things up"

the two processes are totally independent. You are either eligible to file N400 or you aren't.

The only possible clash is if the adjudicating officer on your N400 sees your I751 is still outstanding, they will adjudicate that first, often (usually now) at the same time.

Filing N400 will not affect your I751. If you are eligible for N400 and no reason not to apply, then do it.

USCIS will be delighted. They hate LPR's and want us all to become citizens, so the process is way more straightforward than the I551 process is.

My infopass appointment 3 weeks ago in DC gave me an I551 stamp valid for 12 months from the date of the infopass appointment. Nothing to do with original GC expiry, NOA, or extension letter. Just the date of the appointment.

That was my experience. YMMV.

I will be eligible to apply on 17 sept. The reason for my 'mess things up' comment was I understand that when you apply for naturalization when ROC is pending they have to join your applications. If you were on the cusp of being approved at the SC and then they send your application to join your N400 at your local office, that may slow things down.

My primary goal is to get the GC as soon as possible (I travel for work a lot), so I would hate for it to be delayed some because I rushed to naturalize.

This is just the information I have gleaned from VJ, but happy to be corrected!

Thanks!

dropped in here after a very long time..

just had one question

if my green card extension letter expires, do I absolutely have to get the I 551 stamp before it expires or can I live without the stamp till I receive my 10year green card?
