I met my husband on a cruise, and we both love to travel frequently.  My mum was getting remarried so we traveled to Scotland to attend her wedding.  The cruise we were on to Mexico was a family vacation (18 of us).  I missed out on the last group cruise because of immigration issues, so I sure wasn't going to miss out on another.  The Alaska cruise is in celebration of my husband turning 40.  I made a decision to exercise my right to travel freely knowing that there is potential for someone to not understand the process, particularly in light of some of the recent border issues (citizens and residents being denied entry from certain countries).  

 

The agent was only concerned by my expired GC.  He didn't care about anything else.  Interestingly, at the Ft. Lauderdale cruise terminal, when my GC was still valid the agent grilled me on my marriage, asking me questions about my husband, marriage dates, and citizenship questions, which I felt was out of order but I just answered his questions politely.

Wooow, that's what I am saying. Are we, green card holders, doomed to get interrogated even with 10 year GC all the time? That's a big minus of having GC vs citizenship.

It depends entirely on your local office. Some take a very short time, some are closer to a year. If you go to the USCIS processing times page, you can select your local office on the drop down menu and see what date they're working on(ish, for all the regular reasons) for N400s.

No, your husband does not need to attend an InfoPass appointment. Yes, InfoPass appointments are becoming more and more common, as more of us are still processing a year after their applications... you also stand a better chance of getting accurate information from the immigration personnel at your local office than from the telephone monkeys at the call center.

Anyone can be interrogated at the US border, including a USC.

I went to my infopass appointment. She didn't stamp my passport and said that the extension letter extends the status for 1 year from the expiration date on the green card. She also told me that it may take 2-3 years for I-751 cases to be processed

I think 2-3 years is unlikely... there are some outliers where USCIS make mistakes or something else goes wrong, and the process drags on for ages, and I think some officers quote those kind of numbers to try to keep us from "bugging" them. We're waiting a long time but I don't think it will be that kind of time.

Who else here is planning on applying for citizenship? We're preparing that application now and I'm hoping that it'll be processed faster and force adjudication for this ROC. This is all so frustrating. I'm sorry you went all the way in and they wouldn't provide a stamp. I get confused because the extension letter says it's a 1 year extension but is from a month before the green card expired and it seemed to imply it was an extension from the I-751 receipt. So it's actually a year from the green card expiration?

There are conflicting answers on this one, even from USCIS officials, which gets annoying. But most people seem to agree (and most often it is treated as) extending the GC expiration date by one year, and not one year from the date of the extension letter.

Of course everyone can be interrogate at US border. But if you're British, the officer will treat you way nicer than if you were Syrian! Of course, only the ones who are struggling know about such unfair and messed up situations.. I don't blame you
