I can't stress this enough, when I say I am entering the US... I am entering for TWO HOURS, to ship things.

NOT to move, I would still retain my employment, health care, all those things.

I will not be a landed immigrant until I pack up everything, quit my job and lose my ties to Canada.

I just called my port of entry and they told me it was fine, I just needed to tell them the contents and they are personal items and I intend to return to Canada.

Simple as that.

Yoi dont understand that it doesnt matter?

Yeah I understand youre not moving yourself yet. Regardless of when you move you have to declare this year's income. So that point by another member is moot.

Lots of people poe, then go backnto canada for months to finish things up. I am friends with a lady who did just that with her sons.

If the cbp officer at the poe will allow you across with your items without duty to ship them, then yay. If not, as mentioned you hve 10 years to move your items if you are unwilling to poe now despite the lack of issue doing so.

Im unsure why you feel that you must be instantly moving and quitting your job when you poe?

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.  - Dr. Seuss

I moved in 2014 from Canada to Florida. I packed my boxes, and the day before I was to leave Canada, I took them into UPS. Note that your $20 estimate is exactly that, as it is a combination of weight and size, so they'll cost more - there are also taxes etc. I had 6 large boxes of mostly shoes, clothes and some kitchen things, and it cost about $180 which was way less than I expected, and about 1/4 of what Canada Post was going to charge. Remember as well that you must complete the paperwork and fully itemize your boxes, including value and where everything was made. Insurance on your items will skyrocket the price, but UPS does cover up to about $100 per box on their rider, so I boxed keeping that in mind.

I explained that I was departing for the US in the morning, and they copied my passport with the K1. I provided them with a contact phone number.

The afternoon after my departure, I received a phone call from UPS, the boxes were at the Customs clearing, and they need a copy of your entry paperwork. I scanned the passport stamp for the entry and emailed it to them. The boxes cleared and arrived a few days later. Note as well that most had been opened...Detroit isn't very trusting.

Since then, I've continued to ship occasional boxes from Canada with no problem.
