OCD/Suicide Attempt and Immigration

This is my first post on VJ and has to do with our first real concern since we started the immigration process.

My fiancee has had Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder for most of his life. On one occasion nearly 20 years ago (1988) he attempted suicide and was hospitalized.

Since then, he has been consistently treated for his disorder and has not attempted, nor would he attempt, suicide again.

I don't think that these issues will keep him from coming to the United States as long as he brings to his medical the documentation of his successful release from hospitalization and subsequent treatment by his therapist.

Looking for some reassurance here...

Thanks.

Firstly, welcome to VJ!!!

I would not worry too much about your husband's OCD or even his suicide attempt, being as it was so long ago, without further incidents, plus the fact that you have documentation from his therapist that he is now functioning fine with the OCD.

Good luck to you both.

Do a search for user Tigre Tigre. If I remember correctly, her UK fiance had to get a letter from his psychologist for the visa medical about some things he had been treated for in the past (granted, not a suicide attempt - but it still may be salient).

I had to get a seperate letter from a psychologist in the UK as i had issues in my past. Once the embassy saw that the lady just said "i see you had some problems in your past, but sont we all" and that was it.

I would suggest getting the letter from your psychologist before the medical, as he will tell you to get one anyways.

PM me if you want.

 I have never in my entire life heard of suicide attempts as being jail time worthy. That's ridiculous! What state could be so cold and callous? I agree with the others to just get the medical release from the psychologist and then don't worry about it! ....

Life isn't perfect for anyone that I know!

GOOD LUCK!!

Consolemaster just *has* to post on each and every thread, whether or not he has anything remotely constructive to add. That's how you get to be a 'platinum member' in the space of a month.... sigh. What's worse than blatant post-whoring is blatant post-whoring with a totally pointless and insensitive comment tacked onto the end of it. WHY bother posting something like that?!

To the OP... um, what everyone else said! There have been a few similar questions round here, and it sounds like a letter from a psychologist (confirming that your fiance is not a danger to himself or anyone else) should do the trick just fine. Good luck! :)

To craigandkym... I keep meaning to say: I love your avatar pic, that is, ooh, a 10 minute walk from where I am (home) right now! Once I'm finally in the States, if you still have that pic, it will make me smile & remind me of home every time I see it! :)

For you information, and the un-informed....Massachusetts is where that law is active. Find out first before you make assumptions. This is where people look dumb.

When was the last time this law was actually enforced? Because if it wasn't recently it kind of makes your comment redundant doesn't it? And rather pointless considering the OP is from the UK and not Massachusetts.

Oh yeah. Any sexual intercourse position other than missionary is illegal here too. However, it's rarely enforced.

And the Kennedy's live there?

Of course I know the OP is from the UK. Just making him aware that it's not a joke.

Please point me to the part of the OP's post which suggested that either they, or their fiance, consider suicide to be 'a joke'. I'd love to see it, as I must have missed it the first time round.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
