It is my book club selection for this month...and I had never heard of it.

It's actually a "reverse-engineered" novel (written from a film rather than the other way around).

I haven't read the book, but I saw the film - Water. It was absolutely beautiful....great film! I believe it was also nominated for "Best Foreign Film" at the Oscars this year. The movie was delayed several years because originally there was a lot of controversy about the location where the film was to be shot....I believe people in the town burned the set down, and city officials revoked permits for the crew to shoot the movie. There is a small documentary about why the movie took so long to be finished, at the end of the DVD.

The movie is the last in Depa Mehta's "Elements" trilogy. The first is "Fire" the second "Earth" and this one "Water" being the last. Each examines a highly controversial subject and/or time period in India. I recommend watching all three. :yes:

I just saw a part of "Fire" again on IFC last week. I love love love Deepa Mehta. "Earth" was my favorite. I think the movie-to-book thing is a little bit lame, but the film was really great.
