How Americans feel about the state of their lives have improved markedly in the eight years since Barack Obama was elected president, according to Gallup data released Tuesday.

In 2008, fewer than half of Americans said their life was good enough to be considered "thriving," according to Gallup. But that's changed: "The 55.4% who are thriving so far in 2016 is on pace to be the highest recorded in the nine years Gallup and Healthways have tracked it," according to the report.

Not only that, members of each ethnic or racial group in Gallup's study feel better about their lives.

"The percentages of U.S. whites, blacks, Hispanics and Asians who are thriving have all increased during the Obama era," Gallup notes. The percentage of blacks thriving has risen by about 6 points, as has the percentage of whites and Hispanics. Asian thriving has risen by about 10 points since 2008.

The Gallup numbers suggest that for many Americans, fewer things today need fixing than they did eight years ago.

In the first three months of this year, the rate was at 63.5%, not seasonally adjusted. That is down from 63.8% in the fourth quarter of 2015, according to estimates published on Thursday by the Commerce Department. That puts it back near its 48-year low of 63.4% in the second quarter of 2015.

Donald Trump has been repeatedly called a racist by protesters at his rallies. But the Republican frontrunner says he'd "do a great job" for blacks, much better than America's first black president, Barack Obama.

"58% and even 59% of African-American youth has no job. African-Americans in their prime -- 30 years old, 40 years old, 50 years old -- they are way, way behind, Trump told CNN's Wolf Blitzer earlier this week. "We have an African-American president and what he's done for African-Americans is a shame."

There's no question blacks suffered during the Great Recession and the subsequent slow recovery. Blacks and Hispanics lost a large share of their wealth during this period because more of their net worth is tied up in housing. In addition, they continue to face similar wage stagnation and income pressures as other Americans.

But have blacks done so much worse under Obama? CNNMoney took a look.

The unemployment rate for black teens, as well as for blacks age 16 to 24, has dropped by more than half from its high point during the Obama administration.

During the depths of the crisis, the unemployment rate for black teens spiked to as high as 48.9% in September 2010. For those age 16 to 24, the jobless rate jumped up to 32.5% in January 2010.

Both rates have since recovered -- along with the rest of the job market -- to 23.3% for teens and 14.5% for those age 16 to 24, as of February.

Trump's "58% and even 59%" figure for African-American youth unemployment is likely extrapolated from the employment-to-population ratio, which shows that 42.4% of blacks ages 16 to 24 had a job in February. But that doesn't mean that the rest -- or 57.6% -- were unemployed. To be considered unemployed, one has to be looking for a job. Those in school or not looking for work are not included.

“Like the rest of America, Black America, in the aggregate, is better off now than it was when I came into office,” said President Obama on December 19, in response to a question by Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent April Ryan.

What planet African Americans are doing “better off” on is unknown. What is known is that President Obama is about to leave office with African Americans in their worst economic situation since Ronald Reagan. A look at every key stat as President Obama starts his sixth year in office illustrates that.

Unemployment. The average Black unemployment under President Bush was 10 percent. The average under President Obama after six years is 14 percent. Black unemployment, “has always been double” [that of Whites] but it hasn’t always been 14 percent. The administration was silent when Black unemployment hit 16 percent – a 27-year high – in late 2011.

Poverty. The percentage of Blacks in poverty in 2009 was 25 percent; it is now 27 percent. The issue of poverty is rarely mentioned by the president or any members of his cabinet. Currently, more than 45 million people – 1 in 7 Americans – live below the poverty line.

The Black/White Wealth Gap. The wealth gap between Blacks and Whites in America is at a 24-year high. A December study by PEW Research Center revealed the average White household is worth $141,900, and the average Black household is worth $11,000. From 2010 to 2013, the median income for Black households plunged 9 percent.

Income inequality. “Between 2009 and 2012 the top one percent of Americans enjoyed 95 percent of all income gains, according to research from U.C. Berkeley,” reported The Atlantic. It was the worst since 1928. As income inequality has widened during President Obama’s time in office, the president has endorsed tax policy that has widened inequality, such as the Bush Tax cuts.

Education: The high school dropout rate has improved during the Obama administration. However, currently 42 percent of Black children attend high poverty schools, compared to only 6 percent of White students. The Department of Education’s change to Parent PLUS loans requirements cost HBCU’s more than $150 million and interrupted the educations of 28,000-plus HBCU students.
